Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

thanks alot dave for the info and taking the time to share the pictures I was really curious over the breed when I was speaking with them, they sound like a nice meaty bird n produces eggs...they remind me an awful lot of RIR's which I aviod like the plague where did your orp and wyandotte come from? :)

WOW !!! I'm beginning to think you should have kept your dislike for RIR's to yourself...

Amberjem, put on your battle gear, folks will try and stone you for forming an opinion contrary to theirs......

Jeezzzzz folks.... put a cork in it..... It's none of your business "WHY" Amberjem dislikes RIR's.....

I think they were curious.

I've stayed clear of hatchery RIR for my layer flock as well. I also won't have any more hatchery Barred Rocks. Had issues with the first ones I got.

Now I love the bearded chickens. Love, love the beards.

LOL you could ask anyone who knows me real life dispite what anyone else may think or say I form my own opinions and not afraid of being different from the rest . That said I know from my experience I didnt like them and I also know the birds she had were her choice and the way they were I think she choose them because they were working girls eggs and meat nothing sentimental they werent pets so the ttemperament wasnt issue for her probly made it easier to treat them as meat birds I have seen many ppl express positive opinions about them and express they were nothing like the chicks my grandmother kept, however that said My experiences still colored my opinion and thoughts over them perhaps I might change my mind with my new experience however I do know there are a Wide world of chicken breeds to choose from and for my own chicken keeping choices I prefer sweet docile birds who with plumage and personality I have fun with along with meat and eggs :) so that said feel free to express a different opinion from mine, I welcome your stories and what you may wish to express and probly share some of my own stories or thoughts and opinions :) they say variety is the spice of life well bring on the menu :)

so Dave whats your personal favorite chicken and why? :) Also anyone with lotsa experience with chickens who has lived in different places what would you say are the challenges of chicken keeping in our state over other states? I see alot of ppl advertising online to get rid of chickens ect is this the backyard chicken craze and ppl doing it then discovering it isnt for them does our rain and overcast gloom have more of a laying issue with chickens here over other places?

It's amazing how early experiences can affect our ideas for the rest of our lives. A dog knocks you down, a duck chases you, a clown startles you, or your first plate of chow mein is the worst on the planet. It's nearly impossible to get past them sometimes. But I did eventually get some really good chow mein and love asian food now! I'm still on the fence with most dogs.

Too bad your grandma didn't have the opportunity to breed for personality. I'm glad that's something breeders are aware of now and take into consideration when choosing their stock.
yep never know when those influences might rear there head :)

My heavens I was simply curious as I started raising reds back in the 70's. The reason I like them so much is because they are so friendly and I really wanted to know why someone would have such dislike for them. I had no intention of offending anyone, no need for battle gear or for telling anyone to put a cork in it. The lack of civility in Internet forums is one major reason I rarely comment on them. If I offended anyone I apologize.

I am glad you choose to comment and come out of the shadows :) I really like hearing positive stuff over them, mostly because off how I think humanity has created the not so nice rir line because of production, I took no offense this medium is a slippery slope sometimes to communicate in

so when you say raising rir is that a ssustainable flock of your own birds or replacing with chicks from other source? I'm not sure if that makes sense :) I may not know the terminology I know some ppl get feed store chicks raise em up get the eggs and freezer camp them eventually n replace with more chicks from outside source were I consider sustainable flock get your chicks raise them they have chicks ect might bring some outside stock in to fresh genetics ect..
