Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Luckily, it's been pretty dry where I'm at, but I keep hearing all about the flooding. I had a friend nearly get into an accident on her way to work today...so I hope you all are staying safe...and dry!

I live in aberdeen. It's wet! I'm up on a hill but I know people that have had their houses taken out by land slides and a few roads are taken out here too.

Hi When you say soaked feed, what are you soaking the food with? When the feed outside gets wet, they don't eat it. So, is there something you mix with the feed? Thank you, quite new to all this but loving it. I have one barred rock, one Welsummer, one Blue laced red Wyandotte, one Lt Brahma, one Americauna(sp?, one black sex link and two black Australorps. Wanted one of ea breed to see what works out best, good layers, nice personalites etc. No roos. Just like the eggs. Anyway, interested in the soaking of feed. They aren't eating the oyster shell stuff at all. They do like cracked corn and crimped oats I mix together as a snack. And they love some hard cat food once a week. Thanks Bonnie Sumner, Wa

Hello and welcome!

I ferment my feed by placing the feed in a large 2gal glass crock (a food grade plastic bucket works as well) and covering the feed with water. Enough so that there are several inches of water above the feed. The feed will suck up a ton of water, so check often when you put everything together. I loosely place a lid on top--not tight, to allow for off-gassing. I stir it now and then. At this point it is simply soaked feed. After a few days it starts to ferment. I scoop it out with a slotted ladle, allowing the water to drain off and put it in a glass dish, then top with a bit of their dry feed. Some folks add a splash of apple cider vinegar to get things going.
As I take feed out, I add more dry feed and water back into the bucket to get it back to the original level. A never-ending bucket!
Hope that helps. I posted a link somewhere in a previous post. Also, type Fermented Feed into the search a ton of threads on it come up.

Your flock sounds colorful and friendly! :)

I found a fantastic wooden playhouse for free on CL that I want to convert. But it needs to get from Seattle to my place in Tacoma. My dad says he will try to get it for me Friday evening (the guy only wants to meet over the weekend and my dad works weekends and happens to be the only person I know with a truck) but no promises.... Wish me luck. It'd be a perfect duck house, IMO, after some work. Assuming my kids don't commandeer it. ;)
