Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I'm terrified with the big ponds here. The chickens aren't getting out to free range. Their pens aren't anywhere near the water and the dogs make sure the ducks and geese stay off the property, but they do fly over. The dogs deserve steak for their efforts to get rid of the starlings last summer and fall which worked in combination with more netting.

I've been tightening down the pens and am getting the runs roofed with plastic instead of just netting.

It looks like the USDA (tax dollars essentially) compensates her for the birds in exchange for having them all euthanized willingly.

So we are paying her to kill her birds??

That sounds really backwards.....but that's just the way of our perverted Gov.

I think they are trying to stop the disease from spreading..... Some folks would just let nature take it's course and hope 1 bird survived while spreading the disease to others flocks.... Some folks are selfish that way...

The birds are going to die anyway. It is better for them to be euthanized quickly and disposed of by professionals rather than having the disease spread to neighboring farms. I'm assuming the monetary compensation is in place to encourage people to go along with the extermination policy.

Apparently water fowl (mainly ducks) can survive the disease, but they become carriers and spread it around everywhere. That is how it is being spread right now, by wild mallard ducks.

(I'd rather pay someone for their ducks and chickens than for more affluent scam artists to collect food stamps.)
