Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Kind of reminds me of an ink-jet printer. The heads dry out and clog up if unused for a long time and you have to do a few test prints to get the color right again. Guess the same goes for chickens

I generally get one like them when a dark-egg layer puts out her first one, or has taken a long break. Regardless.... it's an EGG, Yippee!!!!

So jealous! Did you plant the seeds last fall?
Bet its the Sussex, don't think i have ever had a speckled Faverolles egg…..Let us know…..how exciting.

Am jealous too….just starting to get the garden started….did a fruit tree/pruning class last Saturday and doing a berries class this weekend. Longing for greens…..

Hi Local Peeps! I've been lurking here since joining about a month ago and though it was about time I introduced myself. My family just bought a fixer on a few acres and we will be getting some chicks as soon as we can get the coop and run built. We have 2 young children (5 and almost 9), 2 dogs and 2 cats. We have a lot of work to do - clearing old blackberry briars, leveling the land a bit and then building the coop and run. We're so excited to get started! It's great to have the BYC forum in general for learning and sharing and also the local thread too. Thanks!

By the way goats are SUPPOSED to be really good at keeping black berry's from coming back!!!!

Thanks, been following the goat thread too to learn about them - they may be a bit too needy for me :) I already have a needy dog and two little kids lol. We'll see though. They are pretty thick at this point - property has been neglected for years - so we have to use equipment to get rid of them (brambles). I may put the chickens over the young shoots to help keep them down as I've heard they can be effective while the shoots are tender. I would have to protect the chickens somehow though as we do have hawks and the occasional eagle :(
Which brings up another point - I have been perusing the predator sections here and have some ideas, but if any of you have suggestions that work for free ranging to deter raptor predation I would love to hear it. I don't want to keep them in a coop all the time but the threat of Avian Flu and predators has me more than a little worried!
