Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

At what age can birds be vaccinated against Mareks? I read somewhere it had to be day old chicks. Is that true?
The vaccine is labeled for chicks under 36 hours old. However, I have read studies where chicks have been vaccinated at 23 days and had better immunity than those vaccinated at 1 day. Another study vaccinated at 1 day and again at 3 weeks. The chicks had better immunity with the booster than if they had just had one vaccine.

It takes at least 3 weeks for the chick's immune system to produce antibodies after the vaccine. They have to stay isolated and unexposed to Marek's birds or anything with the virus on it during this 3 week period. Some people think 6 weeks is safer to keep them isolated. You can vaccinate a bird at any age, but if it has already been exposed to the virus the vaccine will not do any good.

Was that a short joke??!!!?? ;)

It's been a beautiful day...we bought a 37 year old RV just before we moved to Washington. It's been in the shop solving an electrical problem, now we have it back and it's time for a face-lift. I've been researching how we are going to decorate it. Maybe I should take a picture of my little hens, frame it and put it in our little home on wheels.

I'm a happy calatoger and forager as part of the Kitsap Mycological Society. Although with young kids I don't get as much time out in the woods as I used to.
However, my daughter (7) can identify Chanterelles reliably, and most of the edible berries in this part of the state.. Just need to get the younger one (3) out there more...

awesome would love to go mushroom hunting!
I want to set up a mushroom garden by the woods and the chicken coop for shitake and osyster mushrooms

About when do chicks start to roost? Mine are just over 6 weeks old.

AND, I got my chicks from Del's. How do I know how old my chicks really are? I got mine the same day they arrived at the store. Do I add 2 or 3 or more days to the actual day I got mine? Or do you just go by the purchase date?

I'd better go start supper...it's about that time.
the baby chicks who my broody is raising she started taking them onto the roost last week and they are like two three weeks now....its funny as heck to see the lil bitty chick on the big girl perches...

That is really strange !
I do believe the EEs & OEs and anything with Ameracauna in them to be more active & adventurous, it is just the way they are.
They even hatch earlier than any other breed.
But your RIR are so terrified ?
:idunno
Have you tried to sit with them quietly & place a dish of rice down & just talk to them ?
Maybe try that ?

If sitting quietly with them does not work... chase them all over while shrieking and trying to smack them with a broom. They certainly won't like you much afterwards... but normal, everyday life sure won't seem so terrifying afterwards!

I am always here to help. Lol

You better design the interior to house your little hens when you go RV-ing !
They'll go camping with you !
