Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hi! I'm hoping I can find a lead for a Bielefelder breeder locally.

I believe Chickielady of Spiritwood Farm has them and she was just approved with the proper authorities. I'm not 100% sure but I think so.

I keep re-editing my post but I found my answer. Sorry about that. So, now I have a different question. For that last couple of days, we've given my 14-15 week old chicks watermelon & cantaloupe rinds. How much should they be getting? They are still on chick starter feed. Should I stop giving them treats like this until next week?...or would it be okay to put a few blueberries and watermelon chunks in a bunch of frozen water and set that out for them in the morning? I know it's hot out there for them and I thought giving them a frozen treat might be nice...or have I been nice enough to them for a while? Thanks, all.

I just came across this cute toy for chickens. Take a small plastic (single serving) soft drink bottle. rinse it out, then drive 1/4" holes (plus a few slightly larger holes) and put your scratch or other small treats in it. Put the lid back on and let your chicks play. As they roll it around, the scratch will fall out the holes. The originator of this toy said her chickens have played with this toy for hours & hours and still haven't tired of it. I can't remember if it's okay to post a link to this or not. She is NOT selling them. So, if I'm not suppose to include the link (which is broken), please remove it.

My chickens are ready for this heat to be over. Anything over 85 degrees and they are not happy! Yesterday I filled all their water containers with cool water and then sprayed the grass and bushes so they could walk through the water and cool off their feet. They all stood under a Rhododendron where the pavement was cool and wet. There was also a nice breeze coming up the hill from the west. They seemed happy at least for a few minutes.

I, too am a newbie at this. My Banty got out this morning first thing. Freaked me out for a moment. It looked like another chick, "Red", was cheering her on. Fortunately, I was just awake enough to quickly get her back in the pen/run and gathered up sticks and whatever I could find to fill the gap. Unfortunately we have dogs that wander freely through the neighborhood and they are very sweet but they chase birds, deer and anything else that interests them. I've heard there is no such thing as a silly question and I might learn from your queries as well. Thanks for the smile and the comeraderie.

I have a 5 and a half week old pullet whose flight feathers are twisted. Is this a genetic defect or a result of poor feed? Is there anything I should know about it? I probably wouldn't cull her. But if it's genetic, I wouldn't breed her.

Ochochicas I hope things have cooled down out there on the eastern side. Our girls have a lot of shade to hide out in and are able to weather it out under the coop as well. The weather is nice and cool today near the Pacific side but it doesn't get as hot out here. There's quite a difference between the western areas like between Aberdeen and Olympia. I like the photo of you chicas hanging out in the shade. It's amazing what a day or two can do to the weather, thankfully.
