Manure shouldn't be as much of a problem as the excavation hobby of many chickens. Suggest securing root area and low areas of tree with hardware cloth. Other threads in BYC suggest everbearing mulberry. Search "Trees/bushes in chicken run".

My yard looks like a monnscape in some areas....so many craters & divits from Chookie dustbathing!

Didn't even get the scoop of scratch all the way out of the can before three girls were standing on it with three others shoving their heads in.

Speckles front and center. Poor girl is blind in the right eye from being pecked in it last summer.

I have a couple of rocks that are about egg size & shape.
I use them if I have any suspicions of egg eaters.
It is also fun to just leave in a nest box...and the hens usually all lay in that nest box.

I'm trying to convince them that they don't all have to use the same two nest boxes. They tossed out the golf balls I tried. The brown ceramic eggs work really well with them. Unfortunately I can't tell them apart from the brown eggs without candling.

I think they will toss the white ones out of the nests. I've never had any white layers. Had an EE that actually laid an egg this color of green though.

My mistake was letting them out of the pen before I got the scratch. These EE girls are all five years old now and were hand raised so are pretty friendly.

Well I have went and done it this time giggle, I was going to get 8 Bard Rock pullet to raise so i had layers
all the time I go to Dels close by us they know I prefer my bards I jokingly said I would give up all the light Brahmas
and just have all bards so he is coming after the bards tonight and I have 16 pullet Bards.
