Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hello! I am very new to chickens. My girls are a week old. I live in the everett area and was just wondering when you typically put them in the coop full time? They'll be 8 weeks the end of April and I wasn't sure if it would be warm enough yet.

They will need to be fully feathered and have the heat lowered until they are used to the right temp. When I don't use a broody, I have them in a house with a bulb I reduce the wattage of until they are used to it. Under a broody they get used to the cold immediately because they can run under her when needed.

So my plan of putting several wood eggs in each nest box worked. The girls spread out their eggs pretty evenly today. That's not happened before. I need to clean out the coop and put the wooden nests in under the big metal ones they love. After I hatch some chicks from the ameraucanas I'll be trying to incorporate them into the big pen with the layers since I only have one large fowl rooster now.

I'm down to three silkie boys, one of which is Genghis Pumpkin. Hopefully I'll get another really good boy from him this year. Of the other two silkie boys, one is just a pet with color oddity, the second I like but I think his back is to short for use in breeding. The two get along great so they will probably just stay with the pet girls.

Yes, he is called Genghis Pumpkin for a reason. Large fowl tremble at his approach. Well more like his charge as he attacks them to take whatever they have. He likes to expand his territory and take over, leading his hoard of hens with him. He's been top rooster around here for the last couple years even though he weighs a third of any of the large fowl roosters I've had.

So very cute!

I had barred rocks before. I had issues with them bullying other breeds, though. (Not the silkies. The silkies are evil and have ALL of the large fowl running in terror.) They were nice sized birds for hatchery stock and good layers. If I was just going to have brown layers for eggs for my customers, I'd just have barred rocks.

For me I have my wheaten ameraucana and silkies.
Thank you I only bought them to give me a reason to get up and do somethings every day giggle, please don't get me wrong I enjoy them and I we don't have to buy eggs. I am not wanting to get into the whole rooster egg thing as I have plans for a large garden and we only have 3/4 an acre the Brahmas were not bad birds they just are not my Bards, I guess I am chicken prejudice
