As soon as my brother's kids were old enough to read the numbers the digital clock he told them until there was a 7, they had to stay in their rooms other than going to the bathroom. Seemed to work for him

We've had chickens for a couple of year. We started with Black Australorps but last Fall the neighbor's dog had a banquet. I ended up with a crippled roo and 3 hens and a new shotgun. This last couple of months I have been restocking with some 'fun' ones. I have 2 Ameraucanas, 2 Olive Eggers, 2 seramas, 3 Buff Orpingtons, and 3 Silver Laced Wyandottes in various stages of feathering. I am learning all that I can about incubating because next week (fingers crossed), I will set my first batch. The Olive Eggers are looking roo-ish and I will probably rehome them. The chickens are my stress relief from very stressful job.

That is my life in an eggshell.

:barnie
... My gold laced Wyandotte, after all the trauma of the last couple weeks... Has started showing signs of going broody. The kicker...? THERES NO EGGS. None. Since the carnage, neither my GLW or my barred rock hen have laid an egg. (Understandably so)

:yesss:

Maybe there is hope after all!!

See we have 4 dogs of our own I do not allow my chickens to range free
because of it, I am sorry you had a neighbor that was not keeping their dog
where it belonged, although you seem to have a lively mix going.
We had to make a fast run to my Mom's place she is 78 and her car
insurance just went to 98.00 a week and she is giving up driving.
My hens are 5 Barred Rocks but I have 13 Barred pullets
are you able to see I like my Barreds, daily layers and easy
keepers, then I have 3 Easter Eggers pullets from another member
of are washington group.

We got Easter chicks thanks to my Silkie hens! We are eating our Orpington eggs since our roosters are related to some of our young layers but we are leaving the Silkie eggs in the coop for the hens to hatch. They have a pile of them so we don't know when they are due to hatch, we just gather the chicks instead of gathering the eggs. Our original coop door worked as a ramp but it was too steep so we made a smaller door and put in steps instead. The chicks can get out of the coop but they can't get back in and I will not put feed inside the coop to attract predators. I am just going to let the layers lay and the sitters sit for now until I am ready to start incubating after my surgery. I have wanted to redesign the door and add a ramp but my husband does not like to change things so he does not see any reason for the rebuild.

The other option is to have a nursery to let the hens raise the chicks but the last time we tried that the hens kept knocking over the chick feeders and waterers so we decided to hatch and brood indoors where the chicks stayed warm and dry with food and clean water. I prefer to keep the Silkies laying but they do like to go broody so we might as well take advantage of their need to hatch eggs. We originally got them to hatch duck eggs but we incubate the duck eggs successfully so now the Silkies are just another project.

We have 7 dozen duck eggs ready for hatching so hopefully they are picked up tomorrow or I am going to have to start up the incubators before I have surgery. I need a little more time off before I take on duckling duty. We would have had ducklings hatched in the yard but the crows can get the eggs too easily before the lilacs leaf out and provide a protective canopy. We are going to have far too many eggs this year so we still need to reduce our flock to a more manageable size.

Now that Easter is over, I am looking forward to the inevitable chocolate clearance about to take place. I just love hard boiled eggs at this time of year too.
