Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Cocci doesn't always present with blood in the poo. Bring a collection of her poo to a vet to do a fecal float and look for cocci and worms.

Tube feeding is good as if she gets too underweight then her organs will shut down.
All poultry has cocci parasite in their poo.
What happens is they grow up & develop an immunity to it (there are several strains) and life goes on with the poultry living with the cocci.
Once they build an immunity, the cocci pass harmlessly through the gut.

They are always there, so doing a fecal test will always show there is cocci.

I have had this explained to me several times by vets, and it makes sense.
Otherwise, how do our older birds remain alive ?
Why are cocci not harming them ?
Cuz their immunal systems are aware of the buggers and do away with them before they can do any harm to the gut.

9:00 in the morning. The sun had been up since about 5:45.
DANG !!

I had 2 mink attack at 11 am, on Father's Day, bright Daylight.

Of course we were at Dad's House, and got home at 4 pm, and the deed was done, 3 'Maria Hall Blue Jersey Giant' pullets, dead, heads ripped off, drained of blood...one tried to pull into a hole dug under the "no dig" wire....feets sticking up like someone was planting a garden.......

$100 a dozen eggs here !
Eaten by mink !

We set up a wildlife cam & got the duo on video that night they came back...not to mention our "killer" flock guardian dog was a mere 10 feet away all along....

If they get too stressed or I'll from other sources their immune system becomes unable to keep the cocci in check and it over grows. That's what my vet told me, it's the only reason I brought it up.

Snowflakes is still in the same condition, she is separate. I did add Rose with her in a 6 by 6 run and temp coop. She was a little lonely. With Rose in the temp run/coop with her.. she seems a little happier.

Not sure if this actually have anything to do with her condition, I remember moving our 4 months chicks to laying pellet feed with this started. She doesn't seem to eat the feed at all. When I gave her cooked rice she is very interested and ate that up quickly. Will have to add calcium protein with her rice to make sure she is developing correctly.

Thank you for the suggestion.. I will collect her droppings and ask a vet to take a look at it.
Please read my post about Cocci before you collect poo to take to a vet.

ALWAYS.

I am very glad she is eating !
You can give her water with 50% pedialyte or gatorade in it to help add some electrolytes to her system.
Great news !

Read about the cocci in dropping -

Really! Gatorade.. funny - will try.

Saris - I understand your point Saris - thank you for the help. Will check to see if there are too much cocci in her system.

Giving them a higher protein feed certain won't do any harm. I don't even bother with layer. I've got roosters, broodies, and chicks of all ages in my flock. Makes things much more simple to offer one feed that is safe for all.
Payback makes 2 kinds of [unmedicated] "Chick Feed"....one is (I think) 18% protein, and the other is 24 %........................cost is the same.
This is available at Del's Tractor Supply....

I use the lesser when babies are young, and the higher when they are putting on weight & fledging.......especially for heavy breeds or my Cornish Cross meat birds.

I use Avian Super pack vitamins in the water of ALL my birds at breeding season & growth, which is January to August.
I use it half dosage for new hatches.

I have 1 gallon milk jugs with approriate dosages of vitamins and/or Corid added or whatever supplements each coop needs.

you did right.

But I want everyone to know, cocci is everywhere in every bird's gut.

I have seen so many people over the years freak out & the first thing is they suspect Cocci, and have a fecal test done & it costs alot of moolah......and of course it comes out positive, wether the bird is overcome by it or not.

The great test would be if we could 'see' if the bird's immunal system was taxed....like do a Ig- white blood cell test....LOL
That will never happen, too expensive & they'd all think we chicken people were NUTS.

Now, when you 'answer' someone or respond to a certain post, we want you to click the quote button on the lower right corner..and then type in your reply underneath that post...ok ?
Then we'll know who you are responding to, and so glad your Snowflake is doing better.
Have to ask~
Did one of your kids name her ?
I had so many "Snowflake" rabbits named by my kids !
