Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hi, Washington people. I'm new on the forums.

Those chicks are SO CUTE, Scram. My friend should be hatching some eggs soon and I'm going to have some of those. I'm not yet sure the breeds that I'll get yet but I'm really looking forward to it. : )

Welcome to the group! You have lots of fun in store.

Good Evening Washingtonians!
I am actually writing this from Phoenix Arizona currently but I am planning a trip out there next month to check out places to live. I currently have 19 chickens of my own and I know as far as AZ goes there are a lot of places that do not allow any chickens or only a few hens max (up to 6 hens with no roosters and that is if no neighbors complain...). Me and my boyfriend are looking to buy a house in a chicken (and potentially other livestock - goats, cows, pigs, llamas, etc?) city and would like to know the areas to check out when we are there? Where I am currently the only slight threats are feral cats but for the most part they have left the chickens alone or at least I have not had any injuries to them - crosses my fingers and knocks on wood - so can you also enlighten me on the normal chicken dangers in the said areas you suggest? Thank you so much in advance and I look forward to speaking with you all soon!!

Welcome, glad you decided to say hello and ask for more information.

Washington is divided north to south by the Cascade Mountains creating two very different halves. East of the mountains, which is about 2/3 of the state, the weather is quite dry with cold winters and hot summers. Most of the area leans toward agriculture featuring fruit trees, grain, farming, and lumber. There's a lot more than that, and there are areas with more people, more timber, etc., but that's the thumbnail version.

West of the Cascades is milder, cloudier, wetter, and far more populated with higher real estate prices.

So, your first decision will be what kind of weather and what kind of surroundings do you want? There's no easy answer for the livestock questions as each county and each community have their own rules. Once you narrow down the locale you'll be able to get better answers.

Most people are slowing down on their chick acquisitions or hatchings...I on the other hand have 8 (so far) adorable French Silver Cuckoo Marans and my order of Silver Ameraucanas came in. I have got chicks galore now on top of the three coops and farrowing shed that I have overtaken for my chickens. Hub

is thinking about moving me out to the barn. lol

Super sweet! Just curious... having lived in Ephrata many years ago I remember the scorching hot sun (I pretty much lived in the water during the summer). What do folks do to keep the chickens more comfortable, if anything?

Wohoo - our baby quails just hatched! super cuties

So tiny! So adorable! Pretty smile, too.

I freeze lots and lots of 2 liter bottles and change them out all day. I also planted a 'hedge' of sunflowers all around for shade. I worry all the time about the weather. Last Fall when we had that horrible wind storm, it blew over one of my large coops. I had just moved the chickens into one coop over the weekend or else they would have been hurt or killed. However, when I was a kid in Western Wa. we had trees and limbs blowing over in the winter. lol Washington is extreme wherever side you live on.

You can buy my house.

Already has chicken coops and fenced pastures for the goats and cows.

One of the big things you need to look at here is city/county ordinances. If there are limits on what you have and your neighbors complain about your animals, you could get in trouble. There are tons of predators that will get your chickens, depending on the area - eagles, coyotes, foxes, bobcats, cougar, bear and now I've heard the wolves are coming back.

Hello all! I am located in Vancouver, WA. I have a flock of 7.....soon to be six.
My golden laced Wyandotte gave his first crow today. I'm looking for a good home for him. He was hatched the first week of March, this year. I want him to go somewhere great and be loud and happy.
Anyone looking for a rooster in my area??? I wasn't able to add a photo via mobile but can get one to anyone interested.

Well my broken leg chicken is still alive and kicking, and the crazy broody is still sitting even after we moved her nest. I THINK there was 7 under her yesterday when we tried to count. There is only one egg under her that isn't hers, so I'm hoping that hatches! Everything looks pretty BR ish so far, so the brabanter hen would at least put a mohawk in the mix. LOL!

So I did send 5 of the barred pullets to my caregivers house last night
then pulled my last set of wood nesting boxes not being used anymore but by
one barred and adding 3 more rubbermaid tubs...
giving me about 6 of those. 2 of them have smaller openings my
barred do not use them although my EE are checking them out sitting in them.
Do expect a lower egg count with all the changes last night so far only one
