Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

It is getting weird here.....A week ago, at about 9 PM, we were about to go to bed, watching the news, all lights off in the house but the TV....and something flitted past the TV...and back, and again, and back again..........so we sat up, and looked at each other................WAS THAT A BAT ???????????????????????????????

Yes, it was, and my 2 cats were going ballistic !

BEST CAT TOY EVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not only it is a MOUSIE< but it SQUEEKS and flys too!!!!!!!!!!

So I opened all the doors & let it out & we figured it had snuck in when we were coming in/or out....yeah right.
ALL our doors & windows have screens, and we have indoor cats so we do not leave doors open long...

So the bat disapeared.
Then 4 days later, my calico Amy was pawing under the spice cabinet....she had her whole arm under there , after her rabbit fur toy mouse (or so I thought) and POW...out flies another bat !
Einstein says it is the same bat, I say NO it is a different bat...in any event I caught it with my rubber gardening gloves, only to see it had no teeth to speak of, only rubbery nubs, soft, like small fish bones.
The little guys are super tiny, but have a 8-10" wing span....so cool I cannot discribe !

Maybe I am Batty Lady now !!!
The first one we let out when we crated the cats, and opened all the doors up....
The 2nd one:

Then the 3rd Bat:

and the next one:

So we'll see how many we get tonight.......note, this is a brand new house we built ourselves...so pretty much we know every inch of this house, but some wood may have dried & warped and allowed them to get in...and 1/4" hole is enough !

very cool there did you find out much about them... no teeth? fruit bat ?

I am out of surgery and he only had to do two surgeries, not the third one that he was going to decide on once I was knocked out. I am so glad it is finally done and he did not have to cut into my calf, just my foot and ankle. I have 3 more weeks of no weight bearing but then I can start walking with the air cast.

I thought I would be drowsy and dizzy but I feel alert and wide awake. My daughter's plane landed an hour ago so she will be home soon. I wish I could have gone to the airport with my husband to pick her up but I have to ice and elevate for at least 24 hours to keep the swelling down. I just wanted to post an update since I am not napping as I had expected.
Amazing how they can repair us now compared to even 15 years ago
How you handling things now?

My 13-week old cockerels are almost ready to go to the freezer. But this guy -

Just look at him, so gorgeous. Not really the direction I was hoping to go in, but he's just so darn handsome and BIG. Good and gentle with the other birds too. My young red boys are a little too domineering and combative. I may just have to hang on to this one a little longer. By the way, we call him Goldilocks. My mom named him in hopes that he would be a pullet. And Tweety, the pullet dust bathing, absolutely adores him.

Do you mean that he has characteristics you don't like? You had something else in mind for your breeding stock? He is pretty, I hope he doesn't end up in your freezer.

So glad you're doing well Duck Drover! Heal quickly!

No muffs on him, and he's too light buff. I'm wanting a brighter, more intense red. Otherwise, he's perfect...
He's got the right build, the right size, the columbian restrictor, and was fast maturing. Plus, he's just so sweet with the rest of the flock. Good look out, already tid-biting his girls, and easy going with the other boys (I've got 11 other cockerels right now).
I guess I'll just have to keep him, and the breeding program is just going to take a little longer to accomplish the end goal.

I fingered its mouth open...it is a big mouth for the little dude...and reminds me of cookie monster ......no teeth.....not like you'd think....just nubs. No this guy eats flying bugs...skeeters & such.

I cannot find which bat they are...they do not seem to fall into any catagory of bats here in the PNW....

My guess might be Little Brown Bat (Myotis lucifugus).....and that you have a young one, or more than one. They are the most common small bat here in Western Wa and like to get in attics or under shingles to have babies and you can get a number of females together to form a nursery. Can live for 30 years, believe it not.......I just love bats!
