Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

We hatched our first quail today. Only 8 eggs were fertile (the rest were clear) and so far 7 are out of the shell and in the brooder while the last one is tapping away.

I bought quail rails for the turner after I had already set the eggs on the regular egg rails so some of the babies fell through the holes after hatching and were hanging out under the turner. I usually use a hatching incubator but the eggs are so small I figured they would not make much mess and the hatch is not staggered so I can clean the incubator and set new eggs tomorrow.

I am not sure why so many eggs were infertile but I did not buy them so I am not sure what the breeding conditions are for the parents. I believe they are Cotournix and it is possible the parents are young and just starting to lay. Hopefully more will hatch from my next batch.

One of the eggs had a dried yolk and the shell crumbled before I could candle at 14 days. I have never had that happen before so it does make me wonder how old the eggs were too. I asked to hatch eggs that would not be missed in case my incubator was off and I did not float or candle them when I got them so now that I know my incubator is set to the right settings I can set a larger hatch.

The quail are all going to be feeders as far as I know so, as cute as they are, I don't want to socialize them. They should be gone tomorrow so we only get to enjoy them briefly.

Here are a few newly hatched quail resting under their Victor Ultimate Flea Trap. In this first stage brooder we have a kennel heating pad under the plastic tub to add overall warmth and the lid of the tub is mostly closed with an opening to allow ventilation without losing too much heat. If the babies need less heat we slide the lid open more to let heat escape. The quail are sleeping under the light but also exploring away from the bulb to eat and drink. I don't measure the temperatures of the brooders, I just make sure the babies are not too hot or too cold and that there are variable temperatures in the tub so they can self-regulate. I have a clear bulb in now so it is brighter than when I use the white nightlight bulbs. Because the quail are so small, I am not using the tray under the bulb, it is just the bare floor with shelf liner. I only use shelf liners for baby birds, no shavings.
