I did find one farm where I could get eggs, but I can only buy them in either a half or full dozen. Problem being that my city only permits 3 chickens per household. So if I did get the half dozen eggs, I'd have 3 extra that I wouldn't know what to do with

I'm further north. Your best bet is to get them from a farm or individual breeder. Feed stores don't generally carry fertile eggs. You can always list extras on CraigsList. And you usually end up with a boy or 3.

That's only if they all hatch. Incubating eggs is a bit of learning process that does take some practice to get just right. You also have to factor in that at least half the chicks hatched will be males.

he is pretty boy the one I intend to keep is fuller bodied more like the photo of his Dad it was really neat going to the breeders and seeing his birds just beautiful

I'm really excited to be getting started with our own flock finally. We're buying supplies for building our coop, but I wanted to ask for some opinions. I plan on putting the coop near our apple tree, since I figured that the Chickens would get lots of good grubs and bugs from the ground where all the apples fall. Is there anything I should be worried about doing this?

Make sure to net the top. Hawk could sit in the treee and pick it's lunch
