Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

If it comes from a hatchery, bet it's an EE. Most feed stores only have hatchery birds. There is the rare local feed store that gets from local breeders of quality birds. Ameraucana, araucana, and EEs are the most confused birds out there thanks to hatcheries and what they tell the feed stores.

I cheat with silkies. Partridge is color sexable around 8 weeks or so. No guessing normally. And when I'm wrong, it's because one I thought was male was actually female.

Had one of those last hatch. Didn't know for sure until 14 weeks and no red wing bows and no comb or wattle growth/coloring. It's one of the crossed partridge lines so the females come out odd color first gen and it's normal from 2nd gen on.

Though I'm in practice at looking at silkie faces for sexing colors.

My SIL, first time owner, had me checking her barred rocks she got from the feed store when I visited last May. She thought the one who hadn't grown in a tail yet was a boy. Just the coloring said it was a girl. Males are lighter because of how the patterning works with the barred gene and it being on the sex chromosome. Two copies makes for thinner barring and lighter looking. Birds are ZZ - male ZW - female

I am good a barred now as had both and got quite good at them after 4 weeks EE need to watch till 6 weeks sometimes 8 did have allot more problems with my ameracauna and of the 11 I raised the only one left is my boy who is now rooster he grew up

My favorite young EE pullets. At least the back one has half ameraucana blood.
