Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Chicks started off excellent drinking and eating, very robust bunch. They were left in the incubator a full 48 hours. I raised salmon and trout for 37 years and we always let the fish sit for 24 to 48 hours in the ponds after taking them out of the incubator trays. They had a much better start and less disease problems with holding feed for that time letting them absorb most of there egg yolk. I wonder if that isn’t the best practice with chicks as well. I couldn’t really find any studies on that for the chicks, any of you herd anything like that.

Your chics look great! The reasoning I got was it's not about the ones that have hatched! It is about the ones that have not hatched!! Opening the INC before the hatch is complete creates multiply problems for the unborn chics ( shrink rapping). You did great getting that many to hatch. These are your own eggs from your hens, right? No shipping involved? TOM

Yes these eggs all came from my birds. I will probably just put them in the mixed flock in spring for replacements just in case I made a mistake on species. I will hatch some more Legbar and blue icebar by themselves to make sure they stay pure. I already have 11 Marans girls that haven’t started laying yet plus the ones you gave me so have plenty for now.

I really need to get these roofs done. 2 more to go.

Yup. Dog kennel panels on the sides. I took down the old pole roof that couldn't take snow weight.

5 cattle panels and 2 tarps. 120 lb tensile strength zip ties

Will be looking for Ameraucana/Araucana/Faverolle chicks or fertile eggs next Spring. /would adopt an extra recognized Black, Blue, Blue Wheaten, Silver standard Rooster.
Bit uncomfortable about introducing a singleton Rooster (or hen) to an established flock. Am also a mite shy of hens for two roosters until Spring.
My guy may NOT quite meet the breed requirements - comb throwback, though all his eggmates were right and proper.

Have, Speckled Sussex, Ameraucana and Calico Princess

Had one more chick hatch yesterday it’s pretty weak in the legs not eating or drinking trying to help it out. It grabs the other chicks by the wings that’s the only thing it pecks at kind of strange I don’t think it’s quite all there in the brain. We will see what happens but it probably won’t make it. I’m pretty sure it’s a Crested cream Legbar crossed with a blue icebar.
