Hello, how is everybody doing? Lots of snow ice and cold here in Walla Walla. I’ve been reading a few threads on how to tell if you’re older chickens are still laying by checking their pelvic bones. But wouldn’t it matter what time of year are you are checking? For instants I don’t give my chickens artificial light in the winter so most of them don’t leave much in the winter. Wouldn’t that change the anatomy for a while? Is spring or fall the best time of year to check this? My oldest chickens are only three years old. So I am expecting that most of them are still pretty good. Any info would be appreciated.

Hi Leigti haven’t herd from you in a while. It could stand to warm up a bit that’s for sure had about another 3” of snow last night but at least the chicken waterers didn’t freeze for the first time in weeks. You are correct if your hens are not laying right now the pelvic bones will be close together again doesn’t mean they are not going to start laying in spring just that they are not laying right now. I would wait till most of your hens are laying in the spring then you can check and find out who the slacker is.

Hey mixed our snow is gone but cold as a witches you know what but will kill fleas may not be as bad this year :he
