As for how to set up deep litter, it doesn't work in too small of spaces and requires a certain amount of moisture. I'd put down 4 inches or so of horse bedding pellets then covered ir with several inches of pine shavings to start.
It was horrible by fall but I couldn't get it cleaned before winter so had to deal until spring. I kept tossing in shavings to help. By spring again the smell was gone and it was working.
Doing it again, I'd water the pellets and toss dirt from the run around in the layers to get the soil bacteria in like you do for composting. I'd also make a spot that I kept moist enough for worms and protected from chickens, then add worms and get them established.
