Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I knew last week that taking my kiddo to the "feed store" (North 40) there wasn't going to be any chicks due to the live shipping embargo. She picked out a chick feeder and was happy to do that, even if she didn't get to see any babies. So, this week, we went to a different feed store (The Country Store) hoping to see babies and generally just check out the current state of :what's available". No chicks. Big sign saying their first shipment arrives on 3/5...so we were close, but still a few days too early. Did manage to snag a free calendar (USDA 2021 "Defend the Flock") and a list of chick shipment dates though, so we may be back! I have to be very careful not to buy any chicks though since I have 15 coming and when I went to double check the chicken "laws" here in town discovered I may in fact be 10 over the limit not 5, oops!

The first week in April, my mom and step father are coming up to visit and are bringing building supplies to put up a new run! I've always wanted to use our existing shed as a chicken coop, but don't really have the "skills" to figure it out, but mom's husband does! All I need to tell him is the height I want and where to put it! I'm thinking 7 feet tall (my husband is 6'6", so he'd be able to stand up, but not wave his hands. I'll use my current run/coop location as a second "poor weather" area since it's under my deck and very well protected from weather in general. This also solves the issue of "egg songs" at my husband's office window. Unless, I split the 15 into 2 coops and runs...which would mean twice the work for me, but would give a lot more room to the hens and maybe keep random people walking by from seeing that I have 15 hens in my backyard. But, that'll all depend on what actually arrives at the end of April. I have 3 EE, 1 GLW, 1 Deleware, 5 "assorted rare breed" and that list currently has 54 colors/breeds on it, and 5 "production pack" aka whatever they had more of hatch and not pre-sell chicks coming. The 5 rare breeds have 6 colors of polish as well as hamburgs on the list that I know are significantly smaller hens, I can separate the smaller hens out to their own flock if I get more than a few that are small. I'm wishing I hadn't gone with the "grab bag" chicks now as its making planning ahead a headache!

Done rambling for now...thinking I may need to create another blog just to ramble about my chicken "stuff" where only thise interested in knowing what I'm up to can see, lol.

That’s great to have someone with construction skills!

Sequel, I 100% agree! I'll eventually get pictures of my old coop up (somewhere), but I cannot cut a straight line to save my life and it definitely shows in that coop! He's even bringing me tin roofing, so there will be a good (hopefully) area to play out there year round. When we built the first coop and run, I had no idea how to enclose the top so we went under the deck (its on the second story) to have a safe place for our gals. Having someone to help that knows what he's doing is amazingly helpful!
