Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Happy spring! I have a broody buffo hen! I’m getting some lavender Orpington chicks in a weekish, so I’m trying to decide whether to slide the chicks under her one night, or give her some cuckoo marans eggs to hatch. I haven’t hatched eggs since I was in high school, a long long time ago.

I worry about her a little - her head is small, her comb and wattles are undersized and pale. She’s been like this since before she started laying.

I have done both trick is to give her a couple eggs first let her think they hatched... after you get the chicks take a egg give a peep, take another and so on yes can be more peeps then eggs

We go into lockdown tonight with our first hatch of incubator eggs. Fingers crossed, I think we have 8 viable. We discarded one at day 12, but otherwise our barnyard eggs seem to be doing really well. This should be two silver cuckoo marans, and the rest are snowy white easter eggers crossed with the silver cuckoo marans rooster. We are hoping for a few olive egger hens :)

I am this run is 7 years we have had them .. I grew up on farm went to work did not have them 35 years .. forced to retire bought them to keep me sane think it failed :frow
