Here goes nothing. I got two brown leghorns from the local farm store today. I’m going to sneak them under Buffo in a few minutes while she’s sleeping. I’ll check on them first thing and then, if all goes well, the lavender Orpingtons should be here tomorrow and I’ll put them underneath Buffo tomorrow night.

Good luck hope it all goes as planned

I got the chicks under her, and they were softly peeping when I left. I’m getting up early tomorrow to check on them. I wonder if I made this more complicated than it needed to be - maybe I could have just tried one lavender Orpington out of the four one night, checked in the morning, and then tried the other three the next night? As it is, they’re going to be a few days apart in age. Ugh. So nervous.

I’m not 100% sure. I saw one head stick out from under a wing, and I heard peeping today. The other four go under her tonight. A little concerned that she’s not going to let them eat for a few days. I hope they’re ok.

Well, I couldn’t tell if the chicks were still ok! I really want to mostly leave her alone. She’s not moving, and the woman at the feed store who seems really knowledgeable said she expected Buffo would keep them pretty contained for a couple days.
I took the fake eggs out, felt around a bit, and honestly couldn’t tell if the chicks are under there.
The new chicks were pretty cheepie when I left. I hope this works!
I should’ve taken a photo of the lavender Orpingtons. They’re so LITTLE!

I always put food and water in front of the hen. All my silkies first take chicks to the food and water and park their butts there for a couple days.

I always put food and water in front of the hen. All my silkies first take chicks to the food and water and park their butts there for a couple days.

They have a feeder, water, and water with vitamins. The feeder seems to have been emptied a little today, but other chickens could reach through the crate and eat out of it pretty easily. She’s in the coop in a dog crate.
