Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hey all! New chicken owner here in the Tacoma area and have a pretty sheltered coop and run, which we are in the process of making 100% predator proof. Once it's predator proof (by next weekend), what are your thoughts on leaving the coop door open during the night?

I did some researching around on here and it seems there are folks that use plastic flaps, etc. in order to help keep it warm, and others that just forget about the door entirely. Since it's pretty sheltered I'm thinking I don't have to worry too much about temperatures? But I'm still new at this, so not sure!

We're going to be out of town for a few days for Christmas and don't have anyone set to let the chickens in and settle them in at night, so am deciding between shelling out $$ for an auto coop door (ugh), just leaving it open, or setting up some plastic sheeting flaps (I could repurpose some from the garden).

It's hatch day at our house. First chick has kicked it's way out of a nice dark chocolate egg :)

I had been leaving our coop door open, that is until a raccoon killed 3 girls in the last 2 weeks. Have electric fence to install when this rain subsides. It's wild out there tonight. If you have a secure run, I don't see why not. They know where to sleep, and if their food and water is abundant, a few days will be fine. Maybe a friend could pop by just to look in on them?

His name was Bob, He was a Leghorn Rooster, RIP,
Bob I tolerated a lot from until he started a new thing, He started sneaking up behind me and would try to go at me from behind, he missed once and hit the side of the brooder cage and chipped his upper beak, it grew back........
then one day, I was bent over scooping the coop poo and MR> BOB went for my head---
Game Over
So, I was sad about it but I can afford to go in for stiches from a rooster. Bye, Bye Bob.

On that note, after our move and shipping May23rd, I have on preorder 6 more Brown Leghorns and a Brown LH rooster. I will try again.
