I like the height of your roosts. I have my roosts up high, and then hens fly down from the top, and have hurt themselves. But they all like the higher, the better. Except the frizzles, who cannot fly high. They chose to sleep in nest boxes.

My banty live in their own coop have 4 of them had 5
lost the green layer a banty OE early.
We built the two coops from free shipping crates furniture size.
Could not stand upright in either fixed that made them taller like 2 years ago now.

My roosts are a pair of 2x4s flat on a pair of old wooden sawhorses. There is a small piece of plywood in one spot across both because a few hens prefer to snuggle.

It's amusing to see where the rooster is at night. He's the only one who who moves around. Tries to be with a different bunch of hens each night.

Smudge is great guy to his hens he kinda is mobile this take that one the next night.
He went as far as going in the little coop when I had birds in there.
He started life as a chick in that little coop.

Leven is such a good rooster. He originally was only the rooster with the large fowl because his father died to a hawk when he was young. I was going to replace him with a full ameraucana rooster, but he showed he's very good at his job. He's only gotten better as he's gotten older.

I keep battling with myself about raising a Son of Smudge ?
I do not want to usurp him as long as Smudge is still around ?

You'll end up taking the young one to the auction at some point. Never had any luck with two roosters. Works out until the youngster decides to take on the old guy.

Your right there I have no urge to replace Smudge till he dies.

And then I have Ashes and Broly. Both old men who try and sneak into each others pen so they can sleep together. They are good friends. They are also very good at teaching the young boys to get along. Silkies are different than many other chickens, though.

I usually toss it in the run to build up soil as well so I know this fascination of theirs. I need to clean out houses again, but it goes in a bucket so I can dump in the garden this time where I'm planting corn this year

I am doing the same, this batch went in my flower bed, others go in the other raised beds and garden to be tilled in come March.
