Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

That is incredible!!!!

She's not part of the pecking order. She does what she wants. She was the sidekick of the old head hen who died two years ago. She's the last of my first birds. Raised inside and handled a lot so she's easy to handle.

Very demanding and will just march into the house to eat the dog or cat food if the door is open and they are out free ranging. They haven't been able to do that is almost a year now because of bird flu. So I go collect her occasionally so she can have a treat.

That is really special. When I first got into chickens a few years ago I was thinking I’d have these long term relationships with my birds but so far my longest lived is 5 years. My brown leghorn may be approaching 5 years now, I’m going to have to look that up.

She mostly just lays in spring and an egg a week then. I got an egg in both December and January from her. The last ameraucana is either 9 or 10. She lays a bit better. The other 12 large fowl are between 2 and 7 years old. The other hatchery breeds I had only made it to 5 at the most. Lots of egg and heart issues.

The silkies tend to only get to 7. I had one of those old ones die last week. Thought she just looked off and was being harassed by boys so moved her to the broody coop. She passed in her sleep after a nice day relaxing in there eating.

Ashes and Broly are coming up on 7. They act like old men. I did get a couple chicks from Ashes last year.

I ended up with 2 old hens from a friend who was moving a few years ago. I also had a broody hen who got bored with her chicks at 2 weeks old and wanted to sit on eggs again.
The 2 old hens took over the raising those chicks. According to the friend, they had never raised chicks before.

I also had a hen with a bad wing. She was very sad because she could not roost. I had a friend give me a 10 week old rooster chick. I gave it to the hen. They really took to eachother.
