The sun is reddish orange here this AM because of the smoky air. Other than that, it's a nice, quiet (roosterless) morning. LOL

Smokey in my area too. My boys are firefighters and they’ve been working nonstop along with the wildland crews. My dad was camping somewhere in NE WA and was told to evacuate. Lots of fires happening around the state.

Got the hen house and nest boxes cleaned out yesterday. Added a taller lip to the nest boxes. I’m hoping that keeps the chickens from kicking out the material. The only pad that will stay in the boxes are the plastic ones that the chickens won’t lay on. I have chickens laying on the floor. So I’ll go back to the straw pads with the paper backing and hope the taller lip helps keep them in the nest box.

Going to tackle cleaning the run today and move the chicks that I have in the house out to the brooder in the run.

Don't you miss the sweet little songs of the cockerels in the morning gently waking you to the day?

BTW, Cooper does not crow before 6:30, which is when I'm going out to let him and the flock out.

Real funny, haha! When I wake up early nowadays I go back to sleep with a smile on my face because I know it won't be interrupted by those darned cockerels. So no, I do not miss the "sweet little songs"!!! :lau

I do miss watching the flock dynamics, though, quite a bit actually. I'm glad he's working out for you!

I have metal wall nest boxes that are fairly deep and determined hens will still empty them sometimes. Only a couple of them prefer the wooden nest boxes
