I've been thinking our winter was milder this year. Last year at this time it had been raining non stop all winter. At least it felt like it. We have already had some nice spring days here. Perhaps just milder in the SW of the state.

I think it has been fairly mild for us in the Sound too. It just took a lousy chilly turn once Spring hit! And I’m just using it as an excuse to not do chores.I've been thinking our winter was milder this year. Last year at this time it had been raining non stop all winter. At least it felt like it. It was a milder winter here for sure. A lot less snow and less severe cold spells compared to the previous two years. Can't wait for June to arrive, then it'll start feeling warm to me... without having the intermittent chilly days.I think it has been fairly mild for us in the Sound too. That is VERY good to know! I ordered from Mt Healthy this year for several reasons but I’ll go back to Wilco next year, I think. I haven’t had problems with any birds from them besides production breeds, which I think is inherent with those birds. Thank you!It came up in convo yesterday at the Kelso Wilco and the gal who orders the chicks said the full list of hatcheries they order from is: Hoover, Ideal, McMurray, Jenks, and Cackle. All chicks (and hatcheries) are NPIP compliant and vaccinated most things accept coccidiosis. She keeps paperwork on the birds going back years! Definitely reassuring that they are probably some of the better hatchery birds in the area.
Right?! I also just get the honest sense that the gal who leads the chick ordering at Kelso is so genuine and caring. I always hear her telling people that “chickens are flock animals, don’t just get one, are you prepared to care for this animal etc etc”. I like that they’ll sell 1 chick, selfishly, because if I’m buying from different locations I might not need 4 of one kind. But at least she tries to educate all the uninformed people who think they’ll get eggs from a single chicken at 8 weeks old that lives in their garageThat is VERY good to know! Speaking of Delawares… anyone have any experience with a pullet getting NO black tail feathers or smut/barring at all? I bought this chick at Wilco as a Delaware but it is not feathering out as expected. Not a Delaware? Also comb is big for 4 weeks but less red than it looks in this pic. Very yellow like the legs.Just checked the Wilco Kelso website for chicks and they don't have many. There are quite a few available at the Battle Ground store though.

I'm not familiar with them, however, Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock has some knowledgeable folks who can probably answer that question. I don't know how to give you a link to it, but it should be easy to find. It's a very active thread.Speaking of Delawares… anyone have any experience with a pullet getting NO black tail feathers or smut/barring at all? Wrong thread for this? lol
Oh my goodness. Cuteness overload!!!I bought chicks today!!! Seven New Hampshire Reds. Paid for 6 @ $5.99 each, got a pasty butt one for free. Had to drive down to Battleground Wilco to get them but it was worth the drive.
I made a heated "mama" box using a beer box with towel on the bottom, heating pad on top.
