Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I put the eggs into lockdown this morning. To keep the eggs a little more stable after removing the turning ring I'm trying something new.

I put an old waffle weave dishcloth under the eggs as a hatching pad. The eggs rolled around all over the place last time, when they were directly on the flat, perforated plastic disk. The chicks will have something they can grip after hatching too.

Just got back from an emergency run to the vet. We have a couple abandoned kitties that we put food out for. One has been missing for a while and now has shown up with a very bad eye infection. The veterinarian said the eye has to come out altogether. Poor kitty. We will have to try to keep him inside for a while. That will be a challenge since he has never even been inside a building before this morning.

This is the view today

A bit of a flood going on.

Not sure if these pictures show it well enough but the berm across the river is completely under water.

River is moving at over 28,000 cfs below Mayfield Dam. Flooding stage comes at 25,000 cfs.

He may need to stay in all his life with one eye.

Yes it is! I hope your injured kitten turns out to be a good indoor cat. I think it'll like being inside after being pampered for a while with its medical care.

I'm close to getting the new run ready for the 7 week old chicks. I hauled 4 wheelbarrow loads of woodchips and spread them out inside the run today. I'll top the chips with a layer of straw.

All that's left is closing up the west wall, building the door and putting a hardware cloth skirt around the exterior.

I really didn't feel like working today. All this rain makes me feel lazy.

Well, we are trying. Right now all he wants is out. That is out of the question of course. We have him locked up in our bedroom until he gets settled down. He has never been inside a building before in his 11 years of life. But his brother, who we coaxed in a couple months ago, is trying to help him too, and that might be just what he needs. I'm fine with him staying inside for the rest of his life, but we will see how he does. The veterinarian wasn't too worried about him being out with just one eye, once it is all healed.

It will be two weeks before we can even take the cone off of him. I'm going to look on Amazon for a more comfortable one. For that time he will be confined to the bedroom, and maybe the rest of the house, depending on how things go. I think just the smaller space to explore is more manageable for him at this point. His brother has had access to the whole house but still hasn't come out of the bedroom when he is inside, which is most of the time now.
