Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Ok this is getting to be crazy. Kristine is the broody that I thought was taken by the coyote and then showed back up again, I gave her 8 eggs a few days before Christmas and they were all developing when I checked them on day 4. Now I just realized that I have two more broodies..... Blue Bell a little bantom Blue Cochin and Darla a Barred Rock.
Blue Bell is sitting on two wooden eggs while Darla is sitting on a few eggs and I don't know how long she has been on them so I am just leaving her be and guess her chicks will just be a surprise. The reason I don't know how long she has been on them is because I have been falling behind on collecting the eggs. I don't know how or why but I just keep forgetting to go out and get them after dinner. The longest I went was 4 days. I grabbed them today and I think I saw a blue egg under Darla and two others that I brought in already which means that there was three days worth of eggs. I will check Darla's eggs in the next few days and see if I can tell about how far along they are.
I am tempted to give Blue Bell two eggs, just because I think it would be funny to see this little bantom running around with two LF chicks.

Jess- Oh hun I hope you feel better very soon and that it does not get passed onto anyone elts in your home. Sorry you are so sick.

itsren- I would try putting Blackie and Latte out when your coop lights have gone out for the night. I am sure things will work out and they will be happy together before Blackie has to go. Good luck

Don't worry, it will all work out! Just keep doing what you're doing and I'm sure they'll integrate eventually. Plus, they're really still just babies and as long as they have food and water inside their section of the coop I wouldn't worry about how early you go get them out. There's only 2 of them :) After we're all better and after the new year, we want to come visit again!

Yes, Blackie and Latte have food and water inside their little section of the coop. Blackie and Latte seem to be very happy to be back in their side of the coop. They're all snuggled up and making cute little sounds again.

Jessica, we'd love to see you again. I'm not sure what day the kids go back to school - someone told me Thursday. If so, Wed might be a good day. I'll let you know.

So... Drama has retaliated to my trying the chicks in there by dumping about half the shavings that she sleeps on out of the coop and on the ground below. Not-so-little brat! Heaven forbid she should sleep on pine chips that Blackie and Latte have touched! I'm not replacing them tonight - as far as I'm concerned, her big hiney can sleep on the remaining thin layer of shavings over the vented floor. Oh the mind of a chicken is such a confusing thing...

I have an egg basket hanging on the side of our house that I set our eggs in while I'm cleaning the coop/run. I keep forgetting to bring them in from the basket - they're good and cold when I remember the next day. I wouldn't be surprised if they freeze over night. Good thing I read this... gotta go rescue an olive egg from that basket right now!

That would be hilarious to see a bantam being "mommy" to a couple of LF. You should do it!

Latte is actually sitting comfy, cozi in my arms w/o struggling to get out. That's a first! Ya see.... I did something really dumb tonight. I thought I could try to integrate Blackie and Latte in with the bigger girlz so they could have access to the pop door in the morning. Well, Blackie was first to be tormented until he ran out the pop door. Then Latte got pecked a couple of times by Rhodie and Caunnie. What surprised me was Latte got beat up pretty badly by Drama - my mild mannered Light Brahma whom I never seen peck anyone! I am absolutely shocked at how mean Drama was to her.

It's nice to have Latte let me hold her, but, man, I sure didn't mean for her to have to pay that kind of price to trust me enough to sit quietly in my arms.

And, now, I don't know what to think about Drama.
Even the most mild-mannered birds can be cruel to new birds. She should be fine with them soon enough, but in the mean time she will see it as her duty to put them in their places. It's completely normal, but I agree that it's disappointing when the nicest bird turns evil toward new arrivals.

Awwwe, Scottie. What a sweet soul. I don't know if I've ever shared this but he was born an untrusting soul. Took some time, no ropes, no halter. Once he came around he was in my lap! What a joy he was. So glad we found you Jean for his forever home! Scottie and Sarah (my avatar) took care of me for a time. Had to part ways with both but what a joy they were! I will always hold them dear! Sarah and Scottie were like two peas in a pod! Someday they will reunite! I know they will remember each other. I still have Sarahs Babe (Luke) and Sarahs full sister (Spring). They are the last I have of those good days. I will hang on to them as long as I can. Only parting if it means losing the farm or life or death. Ugh, oh my soul. Such sadness to part ways.

Lyn,

Just saw these photos today!!! My little cutie patootie!!!! He was so precious when he was little. Now he is my "Baby Huey".

If you ever want to come visit he is here. We are looking again for a horse for Grace, the current one is not working out either. We have spent $1900.00 +++++ in vet bills in the six months we have had her.

OK so it looks like I have a couple things to cover hope I get em all.

ITSREN for what it's worth. When I need to add new birds. First I do NOT add chicks until they have stopped cheaping and are making "big chicken" sounds. Also I only add at night. I use a red head lamp, seems to bother them less.

And BATS !! Well I have studied them (didn't help my fear). I know that this time of year they are all hibernating. And in warmer they are outside at night!!
