Angel has up'd her status from pullet to adult hen!!! Icaught her in the act laying an adult sized egg and its a biggy!!! I'm still getting pullet size eggs from at least one of her two full sisters and I'm thinking its blondie because she is the smallest. Is it possible for blondie to have reached adult size and her eggs are just small? They are about half the size of my adult eggs.my oldest batch of babies are still too young to be laying so I know those pullet eggs are coming from Blondie and/babe. Yay to Angel on becoming an adult!!!

Hello everyone!
I just wanted to introduce myself as I am new to BYC. I live in WA near Puyallup. I used to show chickens in 4-H but I am now too old. I got rid of my flock about 4 years ago, but I am starting it up again at the end of the month with Cochin & Sumatra chicks! So again, hello everyone and hope you're having a great day in this cold weather!

How much ACV should I add to a 1 gallon waterer? I've read that it's good for their health to add a little. I picked up a liter of raw ACV and a gallon of pasteurized so I can make more.

They often start small and get larger as time goes by. Sometimes they'll just start with large eggs. That's what happened with my 8-month-old Australorp. Started laying very late, but her eggs were big from the start. If Blondie just started recently, it'd make sense that her eggs are still small.

I'm not sure Blondie is laying the small eggs. I'm just guessing because she is so small compared to her two sisters. Because the nesting boxes I have are really 6gal buckets, its hard for me to peak in throughout the day to see who is laying which eggs. I just happened to be feeding breakfast, checked for eggs and about got my finger pecked because Angel was still in the bucket. She came out clucking about 5 min later and I found two eggs. One was cool and the other was very warm. Both are adult size eggs. Would it be possible for one pullet to lay more than one pullet egg in 24 hours almost consistantly? Out of all the eggs I get every day, I averege about 2 pullet eggs a day and 3 to 5 hen eggs. This has been going on for a few weeks.

I have pullets that are laying small eggs and a couple that lay large eggs. They took awhile to get there but they did get bigger. And a pullet vs. hen is by age, not egg size. A pullet is under 1 year and a hen is anything over a year. Just like a cockerel is a male under one year and a rooster/ cock when he reaches a year. :) I love getting pullet eggs, its so eggciting!

Congrats on her first egg!

Pullets most often lay small eggs for a while when they start laying. All of mine have. But my DiL's girl layed a full sized egg the first try, but she was super slow at getting around to it due to the shortening of days. I believe any 'hen' under a year is still called a pullet though. But she can definitely wear her big girl panties now!!!

Hi there and welcome to the crew! Pull up a chair and stick around. We love to have new people join in. Are you starting with chicks or grown birds? Will you be breeding or just enjoying the eggs and chicken antics?

ETA: oops! I re-read your post.... you're getting CHICKS. Sorry for the dumb question.
