Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Angel has up'd her status from pullet to adult hen!!! Icaught her in the act laying an adult sized egg and its a biggy!!! I'm still getting pullet size eggs from at least one of her two full sisters and I'm thinking its blondie because she is the smallest. Is it possible for blondie to have reached adult size and her eggs are just small? They are about half the size of my adult eggs.my oldest batch of babies are still too young to be laying so I know those pullet eggs are coming from Blondie and/babe. Yay to Angel on becoming an adult!!!

Hello everyone!
I just wanted to introduce myself as I am new to BYC. I live in WA near Puyallup. I used to show chickens in 4-H but I am now too old. I got rid of my flock about 4 years ago, but I am starting it up again at the end of the month with Cochin & Sumatra chicks! So again, hello everyone and hope you're having a great day in this cold weather!

It seems that there's an immature Bald Eagle checking out our property today. Why couldn't he have come by on a cloudy rainy day? Those poor girls don't deserve to stay locked up all day. Stupid eagle.

Hi there and welcome to the crew!  Pull up a chair and stick around.  We love to have new people join in.  Are you starting with chicks or grown birds?  Will you be breeding or just enjoying the eggs and chicken antics?

:welcome            ETA:   oops!   I re-read your post....  you're getting CHICKS.  Sorry for the dumb question.

I will be breeding and showing once they are old enough! What type of birds do you have?

How much ACV should I add to a 1 gallon waterer? I've read that it's good for their health to add a little. I picked up a liter of raw ACV and a gallon of pasteurized so I can make more.

Jennifer
Make sure it is UNPASTEURIZED, UNFILTERED ACV though. The pasteurization process kills all the good bacteria you want going into your birds. I don't measure, I just do a small glug for the 1 gal waterers and big glug for the 3's

I HATE juvenile BOP, they are stupid and are willing to attack more because they haven't learned what to avoid yet. I have a juvenile Golden Eagle in the area as well as the hawks. Makes for a busy day of sky watching when the kids are out to range.

What kind of Cochins do you raise?

I have a weird question about eggs. I have 9 hens/pullets that are laying. 6 are black sex links (educated guess on breed) and 3 daughters of one of them crossed with my splashed laced wyandotte (best guess on breed) my question is: does each individual chicken lay a unique egg to their unique self or will one hen's eggs vary slightly. All my eggs are light brown or tan and vary slightly in shape and size. I'm trying to figure out which hens/pullets are laying well if at all mainly due to it being so cold. I don't really want to spend my day spying on them constantly and rarely catch one in the act...lol :)
