Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hi everyone! These threads for each state are really neat :) saves the trouble of figuring out who is close ......I live in Rochester, but make a (almost) weekly trip to the south park/Seattle area each week and would love to get to know more ppl with chickens :)

I have 6 young hens I purchased from The Chicken Man in Orting and this is the first time I have ever had or been around chickens so I have lots of trial and error going on ;-P lol......

So far I've had 2 escaping chickens, now found...... And discovered cedar is toxic.... of course not till after I had it in the pen for three days :-( ..... The Cedars now all swapped out for pine shavings..... this is definitely an adventure:)

I have one question for now, most likely many more to come ;-)..... does anyone know how to add pictures using an iPhone, as that is my only Internet connection for the moment.... :)

Good Morning, and Welcome to the group!

If you haven't noticed yet, this thread can move quickly sometimes so just jump in any time and ask all the questions you'd like. We have lots of opinions and they don't always agree. But that's because it's not a black and white world with chickens or anything else.

If you look back a few posts you'll see a few people trying to put together a "meet up" around Kelso. That would include you, so hop onboard. They're a fun group.

What breeds do you have? Sorry I can't answer the iPhone question, but others will.

Whiski is so beautiful; wish I could have one like him.
Am getting my first chicks next month - week of Feb 18; hoping all are going to be ladies.
I know I have ordered too many; but am thinking a couple might be "lost" in shipping and
I will give a couple away, or put them on CL. And am also hoping there is no chicken police to come and actually
count them. We have a pretty large yard and the closest neighbor has 2 RIR, so she will not complain and might even take
a couple of my extras.
I have ordered RIR, buff orps, black astralorp, columbian wyandottes, salm Faverolles; white cochin, New Hamps,
Hamburg, Dominiques, cuckoo Maran, Polish . . . see, way too many, I know, I know.
And really want a couple Spitzhabens from the Haller Lake lady. And silkies are just the cutest thing I have
ever seen but did show some restraint and did not order those (yet).
Am not seeing any action yet from my darling man who says he will build a wonderful big coop for the girls;
so hoping when he sees these chicks next month it will spur him into action! I tease him about wanting piped-in
music and window curtains for them. He says he is planning it in his head after looking at the Wichita coop
online - an engineer and must think, think and think some more before actually jumping into action.
If not, I will be looking at getting a ready made one delivered fast.

Getting very excited now and hoping I don't have to report losses like the ones I have been reading lately. So sorry to
hear of anyone's girls not doing well.

Thank you Walady :) I am selling alot of his offspring. I have already sold his son that looks just like him but am hoping some of his other babies grow up with his colors. so far, only one has but the others are very colorful in their own way :)

Hamburgs, you say? I need another cockerel/rooster this year, if you end up having a nice one.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and make sure you are using the mobile version. You can then embed photos from your iPhone as long as you have posted at least ten posts, I think that is the number(helps keep spammers out). When you are in the posting box, there is a landscape button, tap that to add photos.

Hi, All, just clicked on the web address and they posted that they have a limited supply since the product is being discontinued.....not sure if it was twin city poultry or the original supplier.....Any other good thoughts on vitamins and suppliments???? I have occasionally used Red Cell and Goat drench in the waterers.

sweetlittlebaby when I was a kid we had a canary and for some reason I thought I'd plant bird seed. All I could find was an empty tin(from throat lozenges) and some dirt from the backyard. I put seeds in there and watered . They came up& got tall. I guess I threw them out after that. Maybe I was expecting them to bloom with bird seeds in flowers - who knows. I know bird seed for caged birds anyhow was mainly weed seeds, thistle, etc. etc. My mom told me we had enough weeds.

I don't think the plants would be as nutritious for chickens, as their own feed. Probably takes a long time till they produce something to harvest

The bird seed I buy is whole corn, and black sunflower seed.
