Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

We're also beginning to cut out William's naps because he won't go to sleep at night and tonight went great! While I was on the phone DH put him to bed at 7pm and he went right to sleep, woot! Plus...did I mention DH put the kids to sleep so I could have a phone call? I love my hubby. I loved today!!

Yes, both Blackie and Latte still peep, although their voices are deepening.  It's funny, not what you'd expect from a chicken that's taller than my Light Brahma!  Blackie is really good in the coop - he makes Latte sleep up against the wall and he takes the 3 big girls attacks.  But - if he leaves for any reason, they peck at Latte and she will usually get hurt.

The reason I put them in with the big girls is because the minute Blackie crows, he HAS to be out of here.  I didn't want Latte in little coop all by herself and have to figure out how to integrate on her own.  I think she's about 16 weeks - and my 8-week-olds are almost as big as she is.  Her tiny size isn't doing her any favors.

I know you know I'm no expert BUT, IMHO, I would immediately bring 4 of the baby boys to the auction with Blackie. Then I'd put Latte in with the remaining 3 pullets and the extra boy. If they're all big and she's small, they've gotta be fairly close in size. I don't think she'll hurt them other than establishing a pecking order. Plus, 8 week olds are more than old enough to go outside with her into the other coop/tractor you just bought off that lady.

I like this idea too. Especially if they are about the same size. :)

Oh my gosh that picture of Lucy just cracks me up. Broodies have such 'tude! I love the fluff. Poor thing, I bug her like a dozen times a day, just to pet her and ruffle her up!

You know what... DH asked me tonight if they were old enough to go to auction and his thoughts were exactly that - put Latte in with the remaining. I wasn't sure if the were old enough to be off a light. But, my light burned out yesterday, and they were outside in the tractor all day with just a 100 W bulb. In fact, they're STILL in the tractor with that 100 W bulb - I'm waiting on DH to give me a hand to collect them to put them back in the brooder. Collecting 8 scurrying chicks, is, well - entertaining.

OK... so... tomorrow's project will be to get individual pics of each 8-week chick and try to get confirmation of who's, for certain, a boy.

Thanks guys.

That's awesome. Feels good, doesn't it. My kids were about 2 when they quit taking naps, too - and they became 12-hour sleepers. LOVED it!

He's already an 11 hour sleeper at night and usually takes a 2.5 hour naps. Should be interesting to see how his sleep morphs over the next month or so. This is new to me. John napped easily and slept 12 hours at night until he was 4!! Jeanine gave up naps at her 3rd birthday and slept from 6:30pm-8am after that, for about a year! Now I have this little person who's never been a good sleeper, and is now dropping his naps at 2 years 10mo-ish. Should be fun!

Have you ever let Pig Pen near them without wire between them? I've wondered if he would still be so sociable with them if they didn't have that wire barrier. I like that he's been good at chasing the big girls off if the big girls peck at them through the tractor.

ETA: Why can't he stand up for himself, when he'll stand up for babies! Oh, wait, I do that too.
