What kind of candler did you pick up? We used a pretty bright flashlight but didn't see much. We thought about building one but the way I've been going we would end up with a dozen or two. My living room is filling up with ice chests and hatching eggs, I think I may be at my limit. NOT!!!!!!!
Order from Amazon! Should've checked Amazon. I have Prime and can get it in 3 days with free shipping. I paid $21 for this at Coastal! I think it is going back. It works well. I don't know how one would ever change the bulb, though. As far as I can tell, it is one that when it burns out, it has to be thrown away.
Man CR you Rock! If I knew you had ribs I would have stopped by and Rustled me some ribs Midnight style on the way home from dropping off the sister-in-laws wallet to the Portland Airport after she forgot it and need ID to get on the plane. Next time your outta town let me know I'll stop in!!

Wish I could help you, but I'm bad at figuring out genders. I have 8 eight-week-olds, and I'm pretty sure I have 3 girls and 5 boys, but still not 100% positive. Someone here might be able to help you.
Well, the bully Brahma is at it again. Blackie and Latte are in the run sitting on the roost peeping that they want to go in the coop. Drama is sitting in the pop door with a look on her face as if to say
. Drama turned her back, Blackie flew over to the ramp, followed by Latte. Within a matter of seconds both Blackie and Latte were knocked off the ramp and Drama resumed her door-blocking position.
Is this ever going to end? DH keeps telling me that maybe we should just give up and sell Blackie and Latte as a pair.
I know you don't want to hear this, but maybe Drama needs to go with Blackie. I have my aggressive girl in isolation until later this week, then she will go back into the flock. If she has not changed her behavior, she will be going to the pot. Today all the other chickens were in the run and mingling great, no chasing or anything like that.
I'd love to get some japanese or d'anvers, but really the main thing is to make Miss Frodo happy!
Has anyone here had a bantam go broody? How many eggs can they fit? I was thinking four or so?
Yes I have had OEGB, B RIR, B FAV and B Am all of which have gone broody. You may be amazed the # they can manage. I have had 10 in (under) Silkiebator before And she did just fine. could have done even more.

For the not-so-fun: I still have to go out to the run, get Rhodie and put her back into the coop. The big 'ol-chunk-o-Drama discovered that she could sit in the pop door and refuse to let Blackie and Latte go in the coop. When we moved her, Rhodie ran out to attack, and was attacking pretty hard. As luck would have it, the automatic pop door went into it's closing cycle, and she, Blackie and Latte were locked out. So, DH and I took Blackie and Latte out of the run and put them in the coop through the clean-out door and left Rhodie stuck in the run to cool off. That was a couple of hours ago. Guess I better go deal with her now. Wish I didn't have to go back outside tonight.
And for the fun: The experimental eggs are in the bators. They have been documented, photographed, candled and set. My kid is very excited. In the candling process we found 2 with significant hairline cracks, so we took those out of the bunch, cracked them open and photographed them. Both appeared to be fertile, and one even appeared to already be developing a little bit. That was pretty cool for my son to see. He couldn't believe that was the start of a baby chick. He's pretty excited. The "not-turned" eggs won't be turned with exception of every few days when we take them out to candle them. We bought an egg candler and the little bugger works well. Now, in the name of science, we finally have an egg candler.

If the young ones are still peeping then it's not going to get much better for awhile. I don't put mine together until the younger ones stop sounding like chicks. And I have tried the putting them in the same coop once. I have better luck with giving them their own little coop, then after a few months or so when everyone is getting along, I move the young ones into the big coop with the others. usually just before POL. I know it's hard to keep birds seperate for too long, as they get bigger and bigger. So just be patient. It took mine like 3 months to start liking each other. I liked being able to give the younger ones a place of their own to sleep in. They had to fend for themselves during the day out with the other girls in the one run.
Yeah I tried this once. I told the girls "ok if yer layin yer stayin. If yer slackin start packin. well the next day I went to see how many eggs I had each marked with a different lipstick. Guess What??? I found one rainbow egg up them brats all smeared their color on that one egg !!
It's a crappy setup. Maybe I'll get a picture of the whole yard somehow (panoramic) and post it here. Or maybe I'll have everyone here over for a backyard "potluck" as a ruse to getting help putting up a chicken wire fence.
