Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

We are in agreement.
Actually, I have looked into heritage line of RIR. I don't see very many that breed the Heritage RIR, of course they may not be listed on the internet for whatever reason and have given up that idea and yet the breed needs to be restored.
Perhaps I'll turn my attention to English Orps and a cross between my Blue Roo and "hatchery" RIR. Who knows what might hatch? (yes pun intended)

My hat is off to you Sir Mikey!! Oh ~ the "eye" of a true breeder is to obtain the yet unobtainable!! I've had 2 hatchery RIR's that were the most productive girls in the hen house (I had 17 total at the time), and regular as clock work, AND they ate less feed than the other girls did. However, they were overlooked (by me) for the beautiful Speckled Sussex hen-lady that was less on laying one egg per/day/week, however, she was so faithful in watching me and doting around my feet all of the time, that I adored her completely for her personality. I probably would have bred her and collected her eggs before considering the ones from the RIR's... just because she was so unique to me and I would have liked to produce her personality in her chicks. (Does that happen in chickens?)

I think I'm going to BB this afternoon to pick up 2 Speckled Sussex 3-day-old chicks. I'm going to keep them in the house until the day olds arrive on Wed night, and give all 6 of them together to Lucy on Thursday morning before daylight. I'm excited to have found SS so close in age to the ones I'm expecting, and now I can give them all at once it should work out better!

Does anyone have baby chicks TODAY? Like...day olds? My poor Lucy is SO skinny she's worrying me. She's been broody for over 3 weeks already and only comes off the nest when I take her off. Otherwise, she's so stubborn she stayed there for 2 days at a time. I'm worried about her and don't want to wait until Thursday morning (before daylight) to give her the chicks I ordered. That's still 5 more days...boo.

I have one that has been broody and wont give up. I take her off the nest and shut it so she cannot get back on it for a half hour to an hour. During that time I give black sunflower seed, millet, and cracked corn for her to eat. It's all kinda high calorie/ high fat type food so she will keep her weight on. She still goes back to her nest after that time but it's just to avoid her losing to much weight and getting cold.
I'm waiting for the ONE egg in my incubator to hatch :( i wish it would so i could give her a chick and be done with this broody behavior.

Anyone know if dels farm supply has chicks yet? Not that i need them I'm just wanting them. LOL Gunna try for some EE's from there.
I can't pull up there ad and I never get an ad from them :( I wanna go on the 15th and get some. That way i can tuck them under my broody and make her happy. And make myself happy by getting some EEs Also going to give some to my mom (even though she doesn't want chickens) because I'm a brat and never listen to what she says.

Also good arguments to give her for why she needs to keep the chickens, anyone have ideas? All i got is store bought eggs taste gross, fertilizer is expensive, and the chickens keep ya from having a lot of waste (they eat all the table scraps). Oh and "I'll buy the feed for them" is my other argument for her to keep them. Hoping it works.

At the risk of (me) sounding like a I am going to say that I am TOTALLY against the idea of giving any animals to somebody that doesn't want them. This has too great of chance to end up with animals that don't get proper care because they were forced upon one who didn't want them!
I am also totally against the idea of little critters being given as gifts at such times as is commonly done at Easter etc. This tends to end up causing many critters to be cast off.

She already has 13 chickens right now. They are very well cared for. My MOM doesn't want them. My dad and nephew do want them. I'm just trying to convince my mom to keep them. She has nothing to do with their care, My dad takes care of them. She's done this in the past then changes her mind when I remind her how nasty store bought eggs taste.
Her biggest argument is the price of feed is to much. I'm going to offer to pay for all their feed. With that said all the chickens she has are mine. I've been paying my dad to feed them and for the feed it's become apparent that he's keeping the money and telling my mom to buy feed out of her money (rent my brother pays her). I'm going to have to change that and pay him to feed them and give her the cash for the feed. That was my fault. I thought he was giving her the money for the feed.
Next year in summer we plan on moving out the country and taking ALL my chickens (even the ones at my moms house) We planned to move this summer but my husband got sick and no we cannot afford to.
I am against giving pets as gifts as that is how i ended up with the most suborn dog in the world at the worst time to get a puppy. But I'm talking to my mom before giving her any. If she doesn't want them I'd sell the extra chicks to anyone that wanted them. It's just dels has a minimum of 6 chicks. I only want 2 because I live where there are limits on how many chickens you can have. While I'm sure owning one to many wouldn't do harm owning 4 to many I'd easily get caught because the noise and smell.

I want to remind everyone to make sure that the light bulbs they buy to warm their chicks aren't teflon coated. I just read my new issue of MEN, and they were talking about it again. The bulbs are coated to reduce breakage and apparently aren't marked. Here's the link to the previous article they had about it back in October. http://www.motherearthnews.com/nature-community/teflon-dangers-zmgz12jfzkon.aspx

I agree. Why give someone chickens who has said that she doesn't want them?

Couldn't you just move two of your chickens that are at your mom's place to your place, instead of getting more chickens now?

So I'm starting to set aside eggs from the two blue wheaten hens and watching the silkies. It's been long enough that I know the one is going to go broody soon. They've been going broody every month to month and a half since I won't give them eggs or chicks. They apparently CAN count when they aren't sitting on any eggs and only sit for 22 days. Another week to two to start laying again, lay for a month then go broody. The one has been laying since January 12. At least I only need to collect 4-6 eggs for her. I should buy an incubator and hatch a few more of them for when I set the silkie. She could probably handle 8 chicks just fine as the rooster also helps care for them.
