Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Couldn't you just move two of your chickens that are at your mom's place to your place, instead of getting more chickens now?

The ones at her house are very flighty, I live in the city. If i have a chicken that flies out I'd be dealing with animal control constantly and have neighbors that hate me. It's why I didn't bring those with me when I moved. And i should mention just a week ago my mom wanted 30 more pullets then suddenly she doesn't want any at all. The ONLY thing that happened is my dad and her got in a fight that was unrelated to chickens and she wants to punish him. In doing so though she's hurting my nephew (he thinks those are his pets).

if it comes down to it and i cannot get chicks then I'll end up butchering the broody (even though she's friendly) to end the broody behavior. Because one going broody causes ALL my hens i have with me to go broody.

It's also very stressful to a chicken to be moved from one flock to another flock, and at the same time deal with going from a quiet country area to the middle of the city.

OK I'm happy to have made some decisions with DH just now. He was going to have to pick up the 4 chicks (2 barred rocks, 1 BA, 1 EE) from Seattle Farm Supply on Wed. after a long day of working in Bellevue, and said he'd rather eat the cost I already paid for those 4 chicks just to not have to go that night. I found others I wanted at Baxter Barn so I'm headed there after lunch with DS2! Hooray! Lucy will have chicks tonight or in the morning

SO....I'm offering 4 chicks that have been paid for by me already ($21.50, breeds listed above) to anyone near Northgate or north Seattle (exit 175 off I-5) for $10. I'd just love to get a little bit of my money back for the 4 healthy pullet day-olds for $2.50 each. They will be vaccinated with Marek's. Does anyone want them? You'd have to pick them up any time next weekend.

OMG. 500 posts in 5 days. As a working mom to a middle schooler I hardly have time to read the posts any more. The only time I have to read through a lot of posts is when I am working. Don't tell my boss. :)

I found one of my 4 year old RIR had died this morning. One of the problems with buying specific breeds each year is that now I can remember when each of my flock was a sweet baby chick and their passing is that much more sad. Last year I decided to phase out my jumbled layer flock and focus on my cream legbar and Breda fowl. But this morning I assured the rest of my flock that they are all welcome to stay as long as they choose to stay.

I have a new chicken tractor on order and hopefully velvet fogg (Dave ) is going to help me out with a coop for my Breda fowl.

Oh man, wish I could but I don't have a car right now. Hope some one can get them.

Hey Carol! Good to see you! If you and some others are going to have Dave build some stuff, I would like to get in on it if possible. I need some external nesting boxes built. :)

Renee, incubation temps have absolutely nothing to do with determining the sex of a chick, it is a myth. The hen carries the sexing chromosomes. She alone determines if the egg will house a male or female. So nothing you are doing is wrong. And remember, you had a very high hatch rate last time. That is what is important with hatching.

I have read that female embryos may be more susceptible to incubation temps being too high. I your female embryos quit, but not your males. You would end up with more males hatching. I don't know if this is true.
Yes it is true, higher temps cause female eggs to quit, same goes for boys with lower temps. But the temp change is so narrow, why risk loosing the entire hatch. Another reason I am only incubating by mother nature, no medling by me.
Does anyone have baby chicks TODAY? Like...day olds? My poor Lucy is SO skinny she's worrying me. She's been broody for over 3 weeks already and only comes off the nest when I take her off. Otherwise, she's so stubborn she stayed there for 2 days at a time. I'm worried about her and don't want to wait until Thursday morning (before daylight) to give her the chicks I ordered. That's still 5 more days...boo.

Quote: I was gonna say you could scramble up some eggs to give to her, I have done that in the past with my injured bird to give extra protein. But you are getting the chicks today, so she should be off the nest and eating normally in a day or so.
Quote:
Thanks! I'll try that for sure. And I'll use the chick starter too, so it's higher protein. Maybe even a scrambled egg? Will definitely do it 2x/day too. I'm going to up the ACV in her water too, she's having diarrhea :(
Don't give too much ACV, she has diarrhea because she is not eating enough. Too much ACV with out feed can contribute to sour crop.
Quote: Absolutely these traits can be passed. Docility and aggression traits can be passed to the chicks. I will not tolerate aggression in my flock. My production Red just got out of a week in isolation for being aggressive to the 3 teen birds. She has changed her attitude, good thing for her too since if she didn't change she was going to the pot. I will be breeding docility in my layer flock as well as the Silkie flock

I sent Dave a note and he talked about being able to drop it off or meet me with the trucks. So I will send him an update note too.

Hi Everybody!
Itsren, I'm ok with boys, I have a large family to feed, so I will probably cull them before they start to crow. Of course, ask around if anybody wants a him for their flocks and not dinner ;0)

So I looked online and was so sad :0( they won't have a couple of the breeds I am looking for until May/April. I am getting so anxious!! We're going to finish the coop and run this weekend, (TacomaFarms, did you still need those boxes?) and they will be so empty :0(
Idk if I should get the chicks they have available and get the add-ons a couple months later, which would mean eggs sooner from half of them...????

Also! Again, I have no problem getting any chicks from Ideal-Poultry if anybody is interested!! No shipping for you! I will be ordering straight runs from each breed, so will be getting more than we need. If I have extra pullets or cockerels in the following breeds and you want them, gotta let me know!
Mottled Cochin
Red shouldered Yokohama
Golden laced polish
Buff Orpington
Buff silkie
Colombian Wyandotte

FirewifeJess is offering to sell the chicks she ordered from Seattle Farm Supply (I think?) because of a change of plans. Maybe you could take her up on her offer?
seattle is a bit far from me and I'm speaking to my mom about why she wants to be rid of chickens. I should mention she does this almost every year probably for attention. Then she changes her mind and wants them. Also if she doesn't want something gift or not she'll let ya know and refuse it.
I just wanted to get some easter egger pullets. I wanted t know when dels farm supply gets in their chicks this year if anyone knew. Never got a real answer only attacked for what i would do with extra chicks.
