Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hello Washington BYC folks :) I just thought Id pop in and say hello... Its been awhile. Life has been very busy for me so my computer time has been limited :( I do think about ya all often. I only read back the last 24 hours.... Good to see ya all still chatting. CR hope you are feeling better soon.

I downsized my girls to just one coop for the winter.. Nice to have everyone in one spot. Still have around 2 dozen. Im thinking Ill add Sex-Links in the early spring, to refresh my layer group Im looking for mild tempers and good layers. I like my RIR and BR but Ive found the BR to be pretty feisty:) . Right now I have way more egg orders than I do eggs... Hehheee.

Ill try to pop in more often to chat.. I miss "speaking chicken" :) I have finals in school now through December 4th... So maybe after then Ill be able to have some PC time.. Miss ya all!!!
I'm going to cut down on the number of girls I have for next year. Would like to go down from my current 28 to 15-20 girls. I'm going with egg layers NO duel purpose chickens !

I'm going with golden sex links, California whites, a couple EE's and a couple Australorp

BSL means Black Sexlink. I love them. George is my second. The first, Xena, was grabbed by a coyote years ago. That was one of our saddest chicken-keeping days. BUT ENOUGH OF THAT! We named her George after Curious George. We had told a feed store guy that there was a dead chick in the BSL brooder and he picked it up. George shot over because she was so interested in what was going on. I quickly scooped her up. She likes to try to style my hair too, but Pudge is the master stylist. As chicks, they went INSANE over my hair. I had to wear a scarf over my head while I was in the room or they would just try to eat my hair constantly. I'd take it off and they would be so happy. They'd stop whatever they were doing and fly to my shoulders. I only had four chicks (Muffet is my sweety BR), so they could fit comfortably.

Alright, if I keep going, I won't be able to stop.

That story makes me wonder what color your hair is? Why this fascination with your curls? Do you have very shiny hair? Could that be why? What do ya think?
I had wondered if George was a roo or a hen. Cute story again. You should write "My Chicken Memoirs" for chicken lovers everywhere.

I just have short brown hair. The loose curls are completely natural. I think they're just darling weirdos.

Back from the vet, and the little white silkie chick gets to stay in her box inside the house for a bit longer. Dr. Kamaka really got a kick out of my little "black chicken". She's apparently a Top Chef fan.

The silkie isn't doing all that bad. She's still standing up, eating, drinking and pooping. I can lay her on her side (either one) and she can right her self and stand up. Dr. Kamaka thinks she may be having a mild flare up of Marek's, or she might just be a weak chick that has problems with uneven floors. They ran a fecal and found a single roundworm egg, so all 4 chicks will be getting Panacured today. (Looks like the cocci is gone, yay!)

So, I'll keep her inside in the box, treat all the chicks and clean the brooder thoroughly, and see how they do. With any luck this little one will get better enough to go back in the brooder.

If anyone is curious, the clinic is Kamaka Exotics in Mountlake Terrace. The exam was $50, fecal was $20, and meds were about $15. Considering how much I've dropped on a greyhound at the ER for a one day emergency, it was a bargain.

But EE's and BA's are dual purpose!

Well... poop. Dog, to begin with: I spent ten minutes picking up dog bombs for every one I was doing anything else, and THEN when I went out to shut the final pasture gate into the orchard* I found a coyote marking poop, maybe ten feet from Ian and Sylvia's pen, and was not ready to go retrieve dog poop to counter it. I buried it under mud (I've got an infinite supply of that right now, if you need any) and cow-pie.

I'm idly considering the complications of wiring a shock cage for the suet boxes, one I could turn on when the starlings attack but which would also come one at full dark to zap rodents. It is possible I'm getting evil in my old age.

Evil, evil, evil...

*which I nearly immediatly had to open when a cow showed up on the wrong side of the gate. Stupid lack of clear sight-lines.

The first chickens I got were Hubbard Browns, which I believe are similar if not the same thing (correct me if I'm wrong). Those girls were great egg producing birds (minus one who was laying very thin-shelled eggs later on and became egg-bound) and gave an egg almost everyday. I would call them medium to small-sized LF. Mine never went broody and they were pretty personable even though I got them at 2m/o and they weren't handled before I got them.

Thanks, that's very helpful. How long did these birds live, or did you cull them at some point?

Ron, where are you going to get the golden sex links? Have you had them before? If so, did they seem to be more prone to prolapse?
Thanks, Carolyn

I bought them at DeYoungs in Woodinville. I don't know if they are prone to prolapse, they all died at a year old

Just kidding

. I bought two back in April of 2009 as part of my original flock. They did both die. one at about 1 1/2 yrs the other at about 2 yrs. I took the first one to the Vet and he said she had a "yeast infection" and gave me meds. But I think he was wrong! The two I have now ( Anne & Oakley) I bought in march of last year. they are Healthy right now. They are molting along with half of my flock right now. They are very friendly birds, and boy do they lay eggs. usually 6 and some times 7 a week. I did read something last week about hybrid birds being more prone to getting cancer

I think you should figure on replacing them every 2 - 2 1/2 yrs. I will keep getting them. Like I said they are very friendly and are excellent layers. a Big brown egg. I will get them at Monroe F&F because they will have sex links and Cal. whites
