Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Do you think I can put all the shavings from my coop cleanout today into the yard waste? It's just wood, right? (And a little poo of course) I'm only cleaning it because I want to avoid mites.

Compost.

Always my choice. I've got two going, for hygenic reasons: chicken-source, and sheep/kitchen source: I feed redworms from the latter to the chickens, and the former goes on the roses.

I've been composting but my compost bin is full. Can't add any more to it. Need to clean the coop still!

Poke a hole in the bottom of an old plastic garbage can and use that as a compost bin, or dig an 18" hole in some weedy but well drained bit of the yard that needs reset, and make a trench compost for the chicken stuff (cover with cardboard/newspaper/ what have you to keep it from getting too wet).

I have a three bin system. There were two big black ones here when we moved in, and I took a tumbler one from my parents' yard. It smells lovely by the time it's been through all three. I mulch everything except lilies with it.

I got an egg already from one of the new hens--either the BSL or the RIR. It's going to bother me not knowing which eggs came from which chickens! ;) Since I just had two layers before, one white, one brown, I always knew who laid each day.

Actually--now that I've looked at some egg color pictures, I'm pretty sure it's from the black sex link. Are RIR eggs a light brown? The egg I got today looked just like the red sex link's eggs but a bit smaller.

Wow I have been looking for this. Too bad it's too far away. I could just have them forklift 2 or 3 of those pallets on the truck and off I would go. Yes I totally know how heavy that would be I also know what my flat bed truck can handle.

Cool! I've noticed that my BSL lays a slightly darker brown egg with lots of dark specks all over. It's easy to make note of her production vs. my Australorp and BR. My BR has taken to laying some very interesting slightly-elongated pinkish eggs these days. It's pretty funky and neat!

Exactly! And he's still a petite, dainty, sweetheart! But his crest has been slow to come in fully and today when I looked at him closely, sure enough - he's sporting a flat little walnut comb. He's always been the sweetest little thing. I'm going to look for a home for him before I take him to the auction. His crow isn't very loud and two of the houses behind me are empty right now so we're not really bothering anyone at the moment!BTW

BTW - I forgot to get in touch with you the other day. I believe chocolate port will be bottled this coming Wednesday, but I need to double check with Rich first. Even once it's bottled it will be a couple of days before it will be ready for a personal label. I'll let you know as soon as I know!
Awesome, thanks Dana.
