Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I still have for layers for sale and would love them to go soon. I just don't want them unhappy, pecking, or overcrowded in the coop all winter. Willing to let them go for $80 total if someone takes all 4.

I'm home with Jeanine; boys are all at sunday school and church. I WISH I was the one hatching some of those eggs, it's amazing!!

We're not going to church either. I woke up with a sore throat. Only having a couple of hours sleep probably brought the sore throat on. I was just too eggcited to sleep.

Stick bugs? Would any body like some? After 2 years of having them we are ready to rehome ours. They are easy to keep. We have ours in a tank with a tight fitting lid and feed them blackberry leaves. PM if interested.

Or, you know, you could just figure that you're part of the larger world, and things will keep happening no matter what you do. I don't keep my feeders (and I'm only feeding suet now, because I daren't breath sunflower dust) anywhere near the chickens, but the sparrows who were here before long me and will be here long after come anyway, for seeds from the perennials and hips from the roses and all the edible leavings from the blackberries and the orchard, and they shelter in the shrubbery and drink anywhere they can.

It's good to birdproof the runs and coops (and I need someone to cut wire for me so I can proceed with that project) but the more you try to control everything in your whole property the more likely you're going to end up with a total barren mess on your hands.

That's probably true. My run is definitely birdproofed. The 2nd run will be, too. 1/4" hardware cloth everywhere - nothing's flyin' in or out of that run, besides a few flies. And even the flies don't get to stick around very long because those yellow topped fly trap bags work extremely well.

When I see my chickens chasing tweeties though, I will be more watchful now that I know they will eat them. That's kind of gross.

I can see it now... "Hey honey, I brought home some stick bugs..."

That would go over like a lead balloon. LOL.

Awwww. You're getting rid of some? Who? Just curious. I have enough chirpies on my hands at the moment. Will that drop you down to 8?

FarminMama - Those eggs are awesome!!! I love that we only needed to eat 2 each for breakfast this morning, instead of our typical 3 pullet eggs each LOL

Today I plan to go to Costco and Walmart after the boys get home with the car so that I can pick up the very last present (Star Wars I for my 2 oldest nephews) and some wrapping paper/gift tags. Then, the ginormous task of wrapping a whole closet full of presents! My husband barely has room for his clothes in his closet anymore because I filled it with presents

Plus we will still have to build the darned doll house for DD but I don't want her to see it early, so I think we'll do that the night before we open presents. DH is working Christmas so I think we'll open presents on Christmas eve after church.

Yes, I think with all the rain my coop is just too crowded. I want things manageable and easy, so we've decided for sure for sure for SURE that we'll stick with 8-10 in the winters, and maybe hatch chicks in the spring under a broody each year. You've seen my setup; the coop just isn't big enough for 12 birds, even with 10' of roosts.

I'm getting rid of my least reliable layers and one of the "babies" who hasn't started laying yet. Princess (OE), Marans, Willow (EE), and Thelma (EE) will go if I can find a home for them. If not we'll improvise. I may even get rid of the poop shelf and add another roost to the coop, and just keep a very light layer of shavings in there and clean it out weekly. That might be much easier than the poop shelf which is too high to scoop comfortably, and the girls don't have much room to jump down from it, so I think it's gonna injure someone one of these days. You know me though, I just don't have help with this stuff so as easy as it seems like it would be, I just can't get it done. For the winter it's easier to just get rid of the birds :( But kinda breaking my heart thinking of someone coming to actually get them and drive away with them.

Cannon Beach is lovely! Sounds like you are having a nice vacation. There are some cool little shops in the town center.

A friend of mine had a house built there for her retirement and I helped her move her gecko army to their new home. I stayed the night and missed the sunrise, but thankfully also missed the herd of elk that spent a while in her yard! I have no interest in being trampled or gored. There was elk poop all over the place. Must make gardening quite the challenge.

Can someone read this post and look at the pics of my araucana here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...s-differently-than-other-breeds#post_10051790 and tell me what you think...

she eats, drinks, walks, poops fine. She's really timid and her neck gets the most crooked when I first pick her up. When she calms down and I straighten her neck, she can hold it fine. I let her out of the pen today and let her walk around the garage for an hour. she didn't poop once, which seems odd to me. I worry too much. She is doing a little bit of head shaking.
