And who says rustling chickens don't pay?? I knew where a friends nice BR rooster slept at night. So I took a little late night road trip (about a mile) and rustled up said roo. This morning I gave him a one way bus ride to the sale. KaChing $11.00.. Paid a good portion of the cost of a bag of feed for my birds. there were a few decent hens too but since I know they are layin and mine aren't I decided to let the girlz stay and I will just go steal eggs when I need them. Oh how I love shopping at midnight poultry supply. Where you ask is midnight poultry supply??? Well silly it's the one down there at the corner of grab em & run !!!!

DW said we had snow this morning while I was snoozin away. Supposed to have some Tuesday I think the news said, But I will wait for it to fall before I believe them.

Crazy day today.

Rocha and Cocoa went to the Enumclaw Auction. I didn't stay. As it was, I barely made it back to my van before losing it. It's hard to give away your pets. Rocha has become increasingly protective of his flock and biting me when I took them out of the brooder, or adding food, was becoming an everyday experience. Plus, it looked like both of them were finally growing saddle feathers. Rocha, despite the lighter colored comb, was more aggressive. And Cocoa's comb is bright red now, so I'm hoping I made the right call on both of them being cockerels.

Flock dynamics have changed dramatically. Without Rocha and Cocoa to challenge the big girls, things have been pretty quiet with the big girls and Blackie and Latte. We let Blackie and Latte free-range with the big girls for quite a few hours today. There was a little bit of chasing, but really, not much considering how many hours they were free-ranging together.

I installed a hardware cloth wall inside the big girls coop and Blackie and Latte are now inside their tiny section of the coop, with food and water, trying to get used to it before dark. Rhodie went up in the coop, looked inside and absolutely flipped out. DH even came outside and said "What is going on?" I'm sure the neighbors are wondering, too.

I'm curious to see how the first night in the coop is going to be.

We still believe Blackie is a boy, but we kept him to help us integrate Latte into the coop safely. She needs someone to snuggle up to, and Blackie has always been her snuggle partner. Cocoa and Rocha were pretty much inseparable, and Blackie and Latte the same. He'll probably go to auction early in January unless I can find a home for him.

We still don't know if Latte is a boy or a girl because she still is not fully feathered. She is developing extremely slow compared to the other three. We hope she's a girl.

The sweet little babies are doing great, don't mind being held by DH and I (the kids are not allowed to hold them). We ended up with 4 BCM chicks and 4 Olive Eggers. The Olive Eggers have a beautiful bright white strip growing in on edge of their wings. I can't wait to see how they feather out. They are so fun to watch. We read up on "feather sexing" and tried to feather sex them between 1 and 3 days old. IF (the big if) we did it right, it is possible we have 5 girls and 3 boys. Time will tell.

Have you guys seen the "Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe" chick sexing videos. Aaaaagh!

Drives me crazy how they just toss the chicks around.

Well, I've got a ton of stuff to do. I have hundreds of posts to catch up on. Hopefully after Christmas I'll have a lot more down time. Have a good day everyone!

Would you please refrain from posting pro/con statements about guns and gun control? It is a most divisive issue, and this site is not established for that sort of exchange. There are other appropriate sites for such discussions, and this is definitely not one. Sometimes we all need to apply some common sense and moderation. Thank you.

Sorry, but W\we're all friends here and this isn't an exclusive thread for talking chickens. We all come here to talk to our Washington (and sometimes OR!) friends about anything and everything, including current events, politics, sometimes religion, and of course, poultry! I don't think it's right of you to come here asking us as friends not to talk about things that are on our minds. There is a lot of emotion stirred up with such a horrifying historical event, and we're here to vent and get our feelings validated among friends. If some of that talk is about guns and the way we feel about them, then so be it. We are all civilized adults who can brush off those opinions who don't mesh with our own and not turn this into a debate forum. I appreciate others' opinions even if I don't feel the same way and I'm glad for anyone who wants to speak their mind here.

Hopefully I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Honestly, the responses to my request to leave non-poultry related topics for other sites are truly disappointing. Perhaps people need to refer back to the title of this website: "backyardschickens.com" -- and I believe we could easily rally around that content, even when it comes to guns for a means to protect against poultry predators and the like. I am not for or against guns per se, but I am sick and tired of having this issue interfering with just about any forum these days, along with religion, race, etc. etc. The statement that we should all be free to speak our minds misses the point entirely, for strongly held "belief" statements unrelated to our hobby (on these controversial subjects) serve only to alienate and drive away those who want to exchange ideas and experiences regarding poultry. After all, this is a forum for poultry fanciers--not a political outlet. Believe me, I speak from experience as the "gun issue" caused an incredible amount of grief in a poultry club back east, so why not stay on topic?
