Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Well I am caught up for now. It's has been one of those weekends. This came to stay with Grammy and DGP for the weekend. She has been driving her mom just a little to crazy this past week, so we are giving her mommy and daddy a break.

I can truly state that it is not easy cooking a full turkey diner for 15 people, is not easy with a very tall Great Dane in the house. Miss Nala can see and reach anything on any of my kitchen counters.

Nala seems to have more nervous energy than any dog should ever have. She and my Jet have had some serious talking smack conversations in the past two days. I have never seen my Jet so intimidated by another dog. I don't think he thought that another dog could be bigger than he is. Nala is very tall, and still really a puppy still. I think that she is going to fill out over the next year.

It has been a little overwhelming around here with 7 dogs in the house. At least we have gotten to have dinner with both of our kids. DD and her DH are coming to dinner, and pick up his dog. My DH is looking forward to the kids arrival, and their departure with their dgo.

My husband's having a cow about these cages, so they're going up on CL. If someone decides they want them, identify yourself as a BYC member so I can give you preference.

I L O V E Great Danes! She looks gorgeous! I know they mature even slower than our breed does, they have always been one of my favorite breeds to hang out with when I was working in the boarding (and grooming, and training...) world to make a living.

~ Tracy [with the best Spouse ever in the world, and our chickens, Coturnix quail, Chukar, 2 mean hissing hen pheasants, pigeons, AND Clumber Spaniels, 3 mostly useless cats, and several firearms (some for hunting, some for self-protection, some because we love history ...) and the willingness to scroll past subjects I am not interested in.]

Honestly, the responses to my request to leave non-poultry related topics for other sites are truly disappointing. Perhaps people need to refer back to the title of this website: "backyardschickens.com" -- and I believe we could easily rally around that content, even when it comes to guns for a means to protect against poultry predators and the like. I am not for or against guns per se, but I am sick and tired of having this issue interfering with just about any forum these days, along with religion, race, etc. etc. The statement that we should all be free to speak our minds misses the point entirely, for strongly held "belief" statements unrelated to our hobby (on these controversial subjects) serve only to alienate and drive away those who want to exchange ideas and experiences regarding poultry. After all, this is a forum for poultry fanciers--not a political outlet. Believe me, I speak from experience as the "gun issue" caused an incredible amount of grief in a poultry club back east, so why not stay on topic?
I think what they are trying to say is that this is a state thread not a specific breed or topic thread. It is a social thread that we can, and do talk about anything. Gardening, our kids, our houses being built, and our chickens.

So hopefully, since you are obviously new to the site(I can see by the number of posts, unless you changed accounts), you can understand this and just read what you want to, skip what you don't, post what you want to post, about and get responses and interact. This was just a blip on the monitor. Not a long lasting debate. I have seen those on here and this is /was not one of them.

So I have pullets laying now. Two brahmas and an ameraucana. Yay! The little blue egg was great to see.

Emma the EE is almost done molting and she also just resumed laying. Last year she waited until the end of December, did a quick light molt and was laying again before her feathers were finished. She had a heavy molt this year. Looked like a dang hedgehog, no feathers left on her neck or head and her body looked like a dog plucked her. So she was out of lay for 2 months. She's been a very good layer for me and is one of the few EEs that give me actual blue eggs. She'll survive the flock reduction this spring when I decide who isn't pulling their weight.

Duke the ameraucana finally figured out what he was doing yesterday. He's been grabbing the girls necks for a while. They'd complain and he'd run off screaming, or they'd kick his butt. He grabbed the mean evil EE x silkie girl yesterday and she complained but she squatted for him. That was new to him, and surprised the heck out of me. She's the one who spent 15 minutes hunting down the brahma cockerel for grabbing her. He kept running and she kept after him.

So apparently she likes Duke. It boosted his confidence enough he went over to the ameraucana pullet that just started laying and grabbed her neck and she squatted, then complained that he was on her back.

Duke's the only male in the large bird pen right now, if he gets to rough, he can join the other boys. The other two were being way to rough on the rocks. I have three rocks wearing aprons now. Poor Omelet was hiding in the shelter because she was cold from missing so many back feathers. She's been willing to come out with the apron on. I wish those birds would molt as much as I like their eggs. They really need it, since they didn't molt last fall because they were young pullets.

Hey Doc, we do stay on topic. You see it as a forum for chicken fanciers, we see it as much, much more. Recent events and current events lead to discussion amongst adults and we all know this is primarily a chicken forum.
I don't see anyone trying to change the forum format. I see adults interacting with one another and helping one another. If you followed this forum you would know that there are planned meet-ups and impromptu meet ups. Rides and transportation is offered to people, chickens and objects at the drop of a hat, all to the betterment of this forum.
A lot of the posters here are not faceless enities to the others. Many are known to one another and visit when ever the opportunity arises.

Questions are asked and answered and discussed in detail if needed.
I think your fears of this forum spiralling out of control is unfounded.

Doc, while I understand your feelings, I need to add that the WA thread is a little different than just a "chicken" thread. Many of us have met in person, text each other on our phones, e-mail, swap things, etc. This is a forum of friends, not just a chicken forum.

Like Jessica mentioned in an earlier post, there are plenty of forums on BYC that stay on the topic. Here in the WA thread, we like to chat like good 'ol friends do, because that's what we are.

Sorry DBN,
Some of us have been active posters on this thread for years. We have a diverse variety of opinions, and somehow to manage to only slighly annoy each other, occasionally.
This is a chat thread on a chicken forum, not a chicken thread.
If it weren't for all the varied people here making this a fun and informative thread, it would have died with Napalongtails several years ago.

Russ

perhaps you could join in.

(and so true at times, but, hey, what are friends for?)

I have a friend with a very sweet young cockerel she's trying to re-home. He's an Olive Egger, his sisters have started laying olive eggs that are blue on the inside of the shell. She'd rather not take him to the auction if she can find him a nice home.

If anyone is interested, please let me know.

ETA: He's currently living near Enumclaw.

I'll be doing the same with Blackie sometime in January. So... those looking for a cockerel, please keep him in mind, too.

Pathetic, I know... but the first thing I thought of when I woke up was wondering how Cocoa and Rocha are doing.

Taking to the auction is not fun.

Now to figure out if the drop in eggs was from molting or hidden nests after they started free ranging the front half of 14 acres! I'm chalking it up to molting as I know the Javas were for sure. Hopefully it was just coincidence that the extra eggs just happened to show up the two days they were locked in the pen.

Ya might want to search that front half of 14 acres.... well, maybe not.

Congrats on the new eggs!
