Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr, woke up to more white "stuff".
How's everyone else doing?
so much for the sunshine they promised. these so called weather experts, sheeesh, and they want us to believe them about global warming.

I am still amazed how calm my flock has become. I watch with great pleasure as they roam about with out one pecking another, just a very light tap from time to time to remind everybody what their status is in the flock.

Once again my girls are not impressed with this white stuff.

Egg production is down to 2 to 3 eggs per day, but that's ok, more then enough for me. Very high cost/egg but that wasn't the reason I decided to try raising chickens.

No snow here, but it did freeze last night.

I agree with you - that it would be nice to get eggs from the girls all the time, but the two months I was only getting 1 a day didn't bug me at all. Ours are pets, and the feed cost for a few is really not much. Dogs and cats would cost a LOT more to raise (feed-wise) than a few chickens. We bought dog food for years - that stuff is very expensive!

Our feed costs have gone up with the littles. At one point we had 15 chickens total. With Cocoa and Rocha gone, were down to 5 outside birds and 8 chicks in the brooder. So feed costs are higher than we're used to.

My big girls are playing fruit ball with a left over fruit tray. We had a bunch of little kids reaching in to grab the fruit out, so we decided what the heck, why chance eating it after kid-boogers could be all over it.

I hope honeydew melon, cantaloupe and pineapple are OK for chickens to eat - because they are chasing each other trying to get it. I didn't think they'd like pineapple at all - since I can't get them to eat a strawberry for anything! They seem to love the stuff. I don't think Blackie and Latte have been allowed to get in there at all to have any though.

Boo. DH convinced me to medicate him and wait. His fever is coming down a little with both Tylenol and Motrin so we're waiting. He's taking a nap now so we'll see how he is when he wakes up. I guess as long as meds help him we don't really need to go.

I hope it comes down and stays down. With fevers, we use the Tylenol, then 2 hours later, Ibuprofin trick. Then we would alternate the two every two hours. That's what our ped always has us do. Since your husband is a fireman, he's probably trained to know what to do if seizures set in. Our neighbor's kid had a 105+ fever-induced seizure once - it was very scary, but she's OK.

I just did a feed experiment and let the girls completely finish off a bag of feed before opening the next, and then recorded the date. Usually I don't care, but I've been wondering how much my little porky girls are eating lately. It took exactly 21 full days for my 12 girls to eat a 50lb bag of layer feed. That's with them free ranging MOST days, with only being cooped in the run for 2 of those days. Not too bad IMO. That's 75lbs of feed a month for a dozen laying hens. That means my eggs are costing $27/mo (from feed NOT on sale...but we always get it on sale) and we used to pay more than that for eggs every month anyway. Woot! FINALLY making some money back on these gals! I can't wait for summer so I can start selling excess eggs too!

When I have lower-ranking birds that can't really get any, I try to lure them to a secluded area and protect them so that they can have treats too. Will they let you hand them small pieces? If your big girls don't try to grab the fruit from you, you could try that if you feel inclined.

My one wired thermometer that's against the house said it hit 21 last night. It's not always the most accurate because of it's location and stays warmer. I killed the wireless one last week. Dropped it and broke the display so I can't read it. Lots of heavy frost. It's still there in a few spots. DH was very happy that I put a towel on his windshield. That much less scraping.

Cooked up a couple silkie eggs and was feeding them to my ameraucana pullet that likes to snuggle. Kittens showed up and it was a three way fight to eat it first. Was rather cute.

Are you asking about the buff Silkie? He is VERY nice. I believe he was born in June. FlyRobinFly hatched him in early summer from Catdance eggs. She wanted to only keep the blues, so I offered

to take the porcelain and buff off her hands as they were pretty bonded as chicks.
Bwahahahahahahahaa Dana!!!
