Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Today a gal at church whom I barely know gave me a wrapped present! I was so excited to get home and open it up, and it is a 1945 publication of Betty Macdonald's "The Egg and I." I'd never heard of it but after doing a bit of online research about the book it's pretty old and famous. I'm already laughing my way through it, she's such a great author and to top it off, she talks about chickens too! LOL
I got 3 copies of a book called "Just a couple of chickens" I handed them off to others. Everybody that I know who read the book said it was very funny. I met the author and All of the copies I gave away to BYCers were signed.

Hello friends. Looking for a local (Cowlitz county) egg for hatching supplier. Looking to add to my flock Please reply with what you have and cost per dozen. Thanks

I have brown egg laying hens of various breeds and a couple of easter eggers with bluish green eggs. The roosters are a Cochin and a Salmon Favorelle. I had a Welsummer pullet go broody on me this past fall. I put three eggs under her and she hatched two - one from each rooster. If you don't mind mutts and are willing to come to Kelso, I can give you some so you can perfect your incubating skills. PM me and let me know if you are interested.

Quote: You can get Pedialite and vitamin E, mix 2 capsules of vitamin E into the Pedialite and give 2 drops in the mouth 2 times a day. This is also a good treatment for wry neck. Our little Partridge Silkie was lethargic and had wry neck, I did this treatment for a week and now she is normal.
Quote: I have had it on 24hrs a day since we have not been above 30 here and you can see the 2.5gal waterer be the tractor wheel, it is leeping that from freezing. He has been very happy with the light outside, since he hates being inside. But his arthritis is bad enough he will come into his crate when he aches from the cold. He loves being able to patrol at night, I like him doing that too. Keeps the monster coons away.

My old dog bear sure seemed to like being outside all the time. Even though he was near deaf nothing got by him anytime.

Weird question, is it possible my hen that looked like she was attacked is just molting? because in the crate in the garage she's lost even more feathers. I mean i filled a quart jar with her feathers so far that she lost since being crated. it's just so weird for a hen to molt this time of year for me though.
She is going to be 6 years old this spring though. I'm worried about her. she's been such a good egg layer up til either she was attacked or began molting. I post this here because otherwise i end up being told it's normal this time of year from people in other states and I know it's not normal to molt in mid winter here.

Cool! Seattle Farm Supply has some chicks I want hatching 2/11. I can pick up 2/13 and give them to my broody. Screw the egg hunt, now I can have chicks I want! Woohoo! LOL Yeah I'm nuts. But now I don't have to worry about my gal keeping eggs warm enough for 3 weeks, I can just give her chicks in the dark instead. And if she doesn't want them I can brood them anyway, I have everything I need. MUCH better option for me, this week is stressful and I don't need that.

Question~ Just finished building a new coop for my girls. It is big enough for 20, but I only have 4. The 3 bigger girls wont let the smallest one in the coop. She is always shunned. Nobody seems to be picking at/on her, but she wont go in the coop at night, instead she sleeps all alone with her head under her wing under the coop in a corner. What should I do?

Just keep putting her in the coop at night after everyone's asleep. Eventually they'll figure it out.

I would go out at night when it's dark and put her in the coop. Some chickens need to be taught where to go at night. She just might not be the brightest hen.
