Hi CR how have u been? Long time no chat. Does CL and T hi come on often?

If i wanted to feed my chickens flax seed, where would be a good place to buy it?

I think they've got it in the bulk section at Fred Meyer's, but I'd look online for a better price. Also, I'd probably parch it before I try feeding it again, or stew it- mine didn't take it very well when I tried before.

Also, Dearie's singing the egg song, so I need to get her an outside abode put together.

My birds love Block oil sunflower seeds. Sometimes i give them lentils or quinoa if I want them to have more protein.

My mom never thought of feeding black sunflower seeds, she started feeding it in December and her hens started laying regularly again.  They had stopped laying beginning of november.  She is sold on feeding it mixed with the scratch now :)

I never thought of feeding lentils.    Do you just feed them raw?   I see them there at winco every time i'm there.    I never get them because I've never ate them and don't know how to prepare them for humans.   My chickens feed is often mixed in a dish daily for scratch.   So much of it is from my gallon jars of dried foods for my family.    I like feeding my animals human grade foods.

Though I also feed allstock.

Lentils cook up fast, and I've found that most things are eaten better when cooked- except rolled oats and BOS. I can't feed sunflowers, though, I'm envious of all you who can!

Try lentil soup with spinach.

I've been wanting to try a lentil soup. We like the taste of lentils. Wish we'd tried them years ago. Trying to get mom to try them other than as part of a soup mix (she can't use those anymore). It would have been a good food when I was little and money was super tight.

Aren't most of the lentils sold in the US grown here in Washington?

Yeah, Washington is a big lentil producer.

I got hooked on them cooked Indian style- boiled with garlic and Madras curry powder, and then finished with onions fatigued in butter and turmeric, garnished with yoghurt and cilantro.

Good things today...

Blackie and Latte put themselves to bed - in the big girls side of the coop! They are currently sleeping in a nest box. As far as I could tell, no one had a bloody beak. Fingers crossed I'll have happy chickens in the morning. If all goes well, I'll take down the hardware cloth divider and give them the full coop space again. A LOT of my problems will be solved as soon as Blackie and Latte have access to the pop door.

The chicks have finally learned to drink from nipple waterers. Oh yeah, baby! No more spilled water containers in the brooder.

THANKS to FirewifeJess for loaning me her 3 lb feeder. I only have to fill the feeder 1x each day. LOVE that! I was getting tired of filling the 2 chick feeders multiple times each day.

Chick count... I think I have 5 boys and 3 girls. It's looking like I have 2 OE pullets and 1 BCM pullet. Of course, they are young, and I could be wrong, but the differences seem to be pretty distinct. It looks like our first attempt at wing feather sexing on day one may have been correct and day three's wing feather sexing may be wrong.

I gotta tell you - they sure are beautiful and friendly birds. I opened the brooder to fill the food container this evening and one of the OE boys hopped out, hopped on my arm - a smiling DH walked over to take a look and the little guy hopped over to his arm and snuggled down on his arm and let me pet him for quite a while. So cute!

Hey all, long time no see....or rather read. My hubby is pretty interested in those Runners. He also wanted to know if you can eat them when they are done producing. He likes the idea of ducks over chickens it seems. -_-;

Firewifejess! Good luck with your brooder!
