Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Do you all use DE? If so, where do you get it? I found it at Del's but it was a bit pricey about $10 for 2 pounds, is that right?

Also, I would like to thank you all for infecting me with chicken-itis, I have decided my tractor coop isn't big enough and that I should convert the back corner of the garage to make a bigger coop & run.

Hopefully with pallets, I love repurposing!

And my rabbits need a bigger run so they can get out more... Maybe a chicken/rabbit run along the fence. It's a CHunnel! http://zucchinimom.blogspot.com/2012/06/introducing-our-chunnel-chicken-tunnel.html

How cool is this: http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/photogallerydetail.html?photoid=2302 Any ideas on what that greenery growing above is?

Why didn't any of you warn me ahead of time that this is so addictive? Now I'm looking at ducks and turkeys and land/houses outside city limits. And I've always wanted a pygmy goat, I will name him Bob (after my dad, hahahaha!).

Or I may need to visit a farm more often so I don't have to have my own...

Buy DE at Auburn Coastal Farm Supply. It's $20 for 50lbs of food grade DE!

I love how those two are strutting their stuff and Drama is like - "fooooood, om-nom-nom!"

My first three girls are heavy grazers. They prefer grass and digging for bugs over feed. I still don't go through much feed with them. That has been nice. Blackie and Latte prefer feed. It's funny how birds have different preferences.

BTW... I think I'll have some chicks for you in a few weeks! After they hatch, I'll let you know. If you need to borrow brooder supplies, let me know. Hopefully my older chicks will be out of their brooder at night by then.

I HIGHLY recommend AGAINST putting children in the IKEA nursery at the height of flu season.

I am now bringing my whole family. Isaac wanted to come and I was going to bring my 2y/o so he could play with the other LO there, but if you're bringing your 6 year old I might as well bring my 6y/o too! LOL And of course Jeanine will be there and she's 4.
I will PM you but for everyone who's coming,

we will meet at the IKEA restaurant in the middle of the store (not the quick-stop by the checkout) at 10:30am THIS Saturday the 2nd. I will have my chicken purse and my family of 3 kids/hubby with me!

AND......

Anyone who's coming Saturday to IKEA, can you shoot me a quick PM with how many of you are coming? That way I can arrange some tables. I will PM you back with my phone number so you can text or call if you need anything.

Sounds official to me!

PLEASE! Contact me if you need pallets! We have so many great, hardwood - heat treated - pallets that are sitting by our dumpster at work. FREE!!

http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/photogallerydetail.html?photoid=2302 That is beautiful and what great overhead protection!! I am guessing a grape vine, wisteria would be gorgeous there, but IDK if its an OK plant to have around chickens?

I definitely will! That would be a huge help! I keep trying to catch people on CL, but I'm too slow on the draw.

On a plus side, I only work part time during the summer! Woohoo! So, summertime meetups I am there!

I have grape vines, I was thinking of running the "chunnel" underneath them. My "top of the peckin' chain" hen goes out and attacks the little dangling vines, it's so funny to watch, she'll peck at one and the law of physics smacks her in the head with it. Then she'll run around the yard like something attacked her! Such a drama queen. lol... I don't know why she hasn't figured it out yet!

Does anyone else have a chicken herding dog?! My dog has taken it upon herself to herd them to the compost pile and back to the coop, except she isn't very obedient when I snip at her to quit.

Has anyone taken a look at the almanac's "long-range weather forecast" for 2013? And I quote:
"Annual Weather Summary: November 2012 to October 2013
  • Winter temperatures will be a couple of degrees above normal, on average, with the coldest periods in early to mid-December, late December, and mid- to late January. Rainfall will be below normal, while snowfall will be near normal. The snowiest periods will occur in early to mid-December and mid- to late January. The stormiest periods will come in early to mid-January, late January, and mid-February.
  • April and May will be slightly cooler than normal, with near-normal rainfall.
  • Summer will be rainier and slightly warmer than normal, with the hottest periods in mid-June, late June, mid- to late July, and early August.
  • September and October will be cooler and rainier than normal."
Can anyone please tell me why the above is ANY different than our "normal" PNW weather? I love how they say "near-normal rainfall." and the hottest periods?? Way to CYA by listing all of the summer months! Sometimes I tell ya, meteorologists & car salesmen graduate from the same "Univ of BS."
On that note, if applicable, what does everyone plant in their garden? Have successes? failures? tips? trends? etc... (I can't believe I used "if applicable" outside of work

Well she hasn't actually eaten any dogs or coyotes, but she sure tries too! Chases them right out of the field teeth bared, snaking her head/neck after them! Luckily she seems to know that our dogs are part of the herd, and doesn't bother them.

I haven't even had the bear wander onto my property since bringing the horses here.
We had a bear on our back deck this year. Yes, there are bears in our neighborhood.

LaughingFeather - I remember when I was a kid, we lived on Walnut Rd in OIalla, and my mom almost ran into a little black bear driving up the hill!!!

Oh Wow, that tunnel is gorgeous! I'm pretty sure those are grape vines. Wisteria look a lot different. Too bad we ripped out all our grapes, but then that's how I got room for my chickens in the first place! And I Love my chickens!!! I they need shade that's sure the way to get it. And I love the perches, too. People are so clever.
