Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Happy Monday! We're up and going. Kids are eating breakfast. I wanted to let y'all know that if you need humane, great tasting eggs to supplement during this winter time, Smith Brothers Farms has great eggs! I did a bunch of research and they had the most humane practices of anything I found anywhere, ever, and their eggs are large organic brown eggs. I opened them up this morning right next to our own eggs and they looked the same inside!

I was glad to be able to eat eggs from hens I know aren't abused, neglected, and tortured, even if it cost me $4.29/dz. Well worth it for me.

We have Latin/Art co-op this morning at 10. I drop John off since I'm not teaching anything this week and take the little ones grocery shopping. So nice with only 2 kids at the store, makes it more fun to walk around, give them jobs, and teach them how to choose groceries. I love shopping with them! Looking forward to our morning.

I got the nest boxes predator proofed yesterday, yay!!! Filled in the gap on the sides and used weather proofing foam strip along the top edge of the whole thing where the lid comes down :) Totally made my week, knowing that Lucy and her chicks will now be safe from predators, and of course everyone else too.

I just built one it turned in to two. The only thermometer that i found was on incubatorwarehouse.com thermometer/hygrometer $14.00 but it not very accurate the temp was low by 5 degrees hope I didn't cook my eggs. Lowe's had one without a probe for $9.00 that seems to be allot more accurate i cut in a Plexiglas window so my girls can watch the hatch. Kayla's science fair project has turned into an obsession for her contractor (Dad). A good place to get a nice big ice chest for pennies is a sea food store we got two pretty big one for three bucks. Incubator warehouse has all the parts if your interested I picked up a thermostat that works really good from them it may sole you heat problem. We are using a 40 watt bulb with the thermostat it works good. Amazon also sell them but most of the come from Inc. Ware. Let me know if I can help, my headaches may a benefit for you. Lol Just message me
sending you a note RobJ - trying to make sure we've got accurate heat readings- our incubator is built- used one computer fan and a hot water tank thermostat, but we got a reading of 120 degrees after letting the 25 watt bulb warm it overnight. Thinking vent holes needed right away to pull some cool air in.

So.... one of my hens had what looked like a poop glob on her butt... It was hard/dried and about the size of a small grape. Right or wrong, I had her in my hands(doesn't happen often) so I pulled it off... Got a few feathers with it, but you can't tell unless you catch her and turn her over.... My concern is what could be the cause? And is there something I need to do different?

I am in the process of worming everyone now, as I had a confirmed sighting of lrg round worms. I am worming them with valbazen.... I don't know if this is relavent or not though....

P.s. good morning all and happy Monday, had fun this weekend... Will post more when I get the computer on wifi and am not having to use my phone ;-)

Just have your friend buy the chicks or eggs and give them to him when they're big enough not to need mama! Win-win!

That's what I did for our neighbors. They wanted 7 - 8 chicks but they do not understand how to raise chicks. They lose them every time. I tried to explain what they needed and you could see they weren't getting it.

So I raised them until they were 12 weeks and now they finally have 7 healthy pullets. They have had them since November and they are thriving at their place.

Like you said, "Win-Win".

I'm guessing the green birds are grosbeaks. Are the woodpeckers Downy, Hairy or Pileated? Those Pileateds are neat. Sorry, I'm a bird nerd.

We have some Pileated Woodpeckers that hang around our area. They are so big and I love their primitive cries - so cool!

Man, I feel like I am just falling apart. There is always something wrong with me. I have bad wrists, the pain gets to the point that I can not even hold my phone in my hand cause it is to heavy for the pain in my wrists to handle. I have back problems because of being in so many car accidents with my "mom" when I was a little girl. I get massive pain in my knees and shins, and my Dad thought that I may have shin splints (what ever that is). But the worst pain of all.... is my teeth. I have so many bad teeth and use to feel really guilty when I would go to the dentist, but then one time a new dentist asked if I had any family with bad teeth and I informed them that yes both my "mom" and aunt have had major teeth issues. He said that is why I do...Wait, what. Yep he said he could tell that I take perfect care of my teeth, but no matter what I do I will always have big problems with them. Crud! Teeth pain is the only pain I can not handle. I would rather give birth over and over again than have any of this pain in my mouth. I am at the point where we are talking about having them all pulled out and having implants put in. I am way to young to have this done but, I have to do something.
Sorry guys, I am almost in tears right now (and I am not a crier) and just needed to kinda vent a bit.

I am very glad ya'll had so much fun at the meet up. I can't wait to meet all of you (that I have yet to meet) hopefully at the Monroe show!

So sorry you are having such a hard time. My son inherited his father's teeth - just crumbled and fell apart. Like his father he had to have dentures in his late 20's. The good news is he no longer has terrible teeth pain and constant infections He feels much, much better.

Didn't realize I needed to do it daily. That's easy enough. And WAY better than mucking out the whole thing every week. I'll work on it.
Me neither. I've just picked at the pine shavings and clean it out when it smelled - usually about a week. I will try turning it.

OK so this may go down as one of the more psycho SUPERBOWL related happenings.

See a friend messaged me bummed that they were having to work, wouldn't get to see the game AND wanted some BBQ ribs I was making rather than frozen pizza. OK no problem right! So I dished up some ribs, Mac salad, a lunch size bag of chips, a Capri sun juice and a blueberry muffin. IN the car and off we go to serve lunch/dinner. So we got in the car at 7:44pm 94.9 miles/1hr 36mi later we were serving lunch in Tualatin, OR. Yup we took Cloverleaf / Jeanine food at work. Just couldn't take anymore of the girl whineing about not getting any superbowl food. And we made it home safe at 11:38pm.

BTW how was the game who won did I win my bets??? Oh wait I guess ya gotta bet in order to win !!

I am just such a!!!

Nikki - Eric at Seattle Farm Supply has chicks coming in on the 26th or 27th of this month. That would be PERFECT timing to order them for your broody. He will have:
Silver Laced Wyandottes
Speckled Sussex
Partridge Rock
Black Sex Link
Black Jersey Giant
Hey there- is there a reason why you get chicks from Seattle farm supply instead of another farm supply? i.e. does he get them from local farmers, or from hatcheries? My local farm shop buys from Privett hatcheries, but I really want to get my stock from local folks who are raising on a small-scale, or folks from this list who have some non-show quality pullets or adults. ( We plan to raise our own chicks also, for the experience and fun, but those wouldn't be producing for months and we need to help my son get more eggs for his "business" ). We use only organic feed at my place and our flock is very healthy and happy- getting 4-5 eggs daily from 5 hens now. (They were hatched last April).

Nobody but Eric had what I wanted, right when I needed it. I'm on a strict timeline with my broody :)
