I'm excited to turn 30. I've been making lots of changes to my lifestyle, wardrobe, home, etc. I *almost* feel like a grownup right now. Almost. I think the 3 kids is the only thing that makes me a grownup.

Sorry I haven't been on here in awhile. I have been having my old riding student out here for the last week or so. We ended up giving her a horse of ours because she has been the only one that this horse likes and trusts. If she comes out and helps me around our 5 acres and works the horse than she can have the horse and in return we will continue to house the horse and feed it. My student is only 15 and her mom cant afford a horse for her right now. So for the time being, she gets a horse and her mom doesn't have to pay anything for it :-) Hanna, my student, will probably stay out here with us for the summer once we get the spare bedroom cleaned up. As for the chickens, I pretty much have almost all of them spoken for. Everyone is wanting pullets but if they take pullets, they get a cockerel as well ;-) the only way I can get rid of the cockerels unless I want to deal with people that don't speak English because I don't speak Spanish...lol. Someone is wanting 4 or 5 pullets so they will get a cockerel with those. a neighbor wants a couple pullets and a cockerel and someone is going to trade us a pair of turkeys for 3 pullets and cockerel. Ive decided that I will only keep 10 hens even though I want 12. Right now, I have 9 that are laying and my tenth one is a pullet from November's batch. She is so cute. She looks like a Dalmatian. If we find people that are wanting chickens, we may hatch out a couple batches but they will all go in the brooder/rabbit hutch with momma when they are first hatched since they will already be sold before coming out of the shell pretty much :-)

Anyways, Ive rambled enough....

That is awesome what you have done for her and her mom. As a single mom of a horse lover, you just made that girls dream come true! I enjoy the rambles...

Congrats on rehoming almost all of them! I'd take a cockerel if I didn't live in the darn city.

Sorry if I missed anything, y'all are on a steam train with this thread!

I remember growing up and my mom was a single parent of 4 girls. She somehow managed to afford to keep my horse and put me thru 4-H and shows. If I can do this one thing for Hanna, I will feel like I have touched a family :-)

I love my age! I feel Independent and like able and I do whatever I want to do! I'm finally a grown up ;)

That's a very cool thing that you're doing for Hanna! It's something she'll take with her forever and not just the horse. You're teaching her that if she works hard she can get or do just about anything. Best of all your teaching her how to help others and that you don't always have to get big bucks in return. People with good hearts are hard to come by!!!
Thanks for Ramblin
X2!! What a beautiful way to help each other... great neighbors are wonderful and God's blessing!!

Oh man I remember when our girls were just babies and we were SO afraid of the dogs "getting them"

Now our dogs couldn't want LESS to do with them. Not only do they pretty much ignore them, in this photo you can see that they're begging to be let inside the house so they can get away from the chickies!

This is how I pass the time waiting for my first egg!

Just stopping to say hi. I haven't been on in a few days. Jessica called me yesterday and told me about the eagle. Scary!

I am making 23 of these little wooden knives. They are due this evening. We are teaching our Cub Scouts how to use a knife safely and hopefully they will all earn their whittling chip. It should be a crazy, busy, fun night. The wooden knives really do carve soap but won't cut little fingers.

Have a good day. I'll see if I can get on and post pictures of my boys in the brooder and of the candled eggs tomorrow. I'll need verification that they really are boys before I take anyone to auction.

I'm so sad. My mom doesn't want chickens anymore. She wants me to rid her of the ones she has. THEY ARE MINE!! she's supposed to hold them til we find a home in the country or up to 5 years. It's only been 3 years. *sigh* I know it seems like I'm using her but I pay for the feed if she tells me she's running low. Otherwise I give her $50 a month for feed. I'm not sure how much the chickens are eating or anything. A week ago she wanted 30 or more pullets added to the flock, last night she called me ****** off saying the chickens all need to go.
I hope she gets over it. I really want to hatch more chicks out but with her not wanting any i'm at my limit of chickens now. I guess i could hatch and sell some but I have issues letting go of my animals. Especially after nearly a month of caring for it watching it hatch...

You are a good person.

I don't have Australorps, but have hatchery BR and BO's. One of my BR went broody at 8mo old(got taken by a hawk while protecting her chick) and currently have a BO setting on 8 eggs(she is 10mo old). So those breeds do go broody. If you really want good broodiness from these breeds, try and find a non-hatchery breeder(hatcheries try and breed the broodiness out). Or you could look into Silkies or Cochins to use for brood machines, they both go broody lots

Thanks again Trav! The more I read/hear/learn about the BR's and BO's, the more I'm liking them. I know since they're larger they will need a larger coop, but we're going to do either a garden shed kit, or get the stuff separately, so I can stand up in the coop, to clean it out and do whatever I need to in there. I'm on my fifth book from the library and things are starting to make more sense, finally!!!!!

I ended up messing around with the profile page and found the desktop/mobile buttons but it's either taking too long or not recognizing I have pictures on here. I lost patience, so maybe another day when I can mess with it, I will try.

It's sunny outside, so once little one is down for her nap, I get to scoop poop! Yay!! We will not have to worry about stepping in landmines soon!! So excited for that! Soon I'll get to scoop not only dog and cat poop out there, but chicken poop too. Pretty stoked about that!! :D
