Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

The brooder raised vs. mama raised question makes me want to do an experiment! Buy a dozen chicks, put 6 under a broody and brood the other 6 in the house and weigh them weekly. That would be cool! I'll tell itsren/Renee so she can use it next year for her son's science experiment!

they usually grow in height at the same speed, but the ones that are raised by a momma hen are thinner chicks. they don't get fat.

Interesting, thanks!

Well guess it's gonna be a slow morning here, bummer. I have 2 kids playing happily and I'm desperately trying to avoid the house work but y'all aren't making it easy on me!

As for insulation. The bees have normally removed it well away from the comb. Any that may be still on the comb is just cut off.
If you ever want to know if you have pure honey. put about a teaspoon of it in the bottom of a bowl. Carefully add cold water to cover it. Now just gently swirl the bowl. Pure honey will take the shape of honey comb, fake or diluted will not. Corn syrup is often used to cut honey.

wow, I am egg-cited to know this honey "test" trick! I just checked the honey in my cabinet. Here's the picture:

Oh my gosh that's freaking amazing!!!!! Awesome to know that trick.

Speaking of raw honey, I'm in need of a bunch. And dried or fresh elderberries. Does anyone know a good source for both? I'm going to make myself some elderberry syrup so I can finally get healthy. I was super run down from that 3-4 week long flu and cold after Christmas and never really got better.I have yet another cold now and need to be well again!

corn syrup is also used to cut maple syrup. NASTY stuff- did you know corn syrup is manufactured with mercury? It's used in the processing at the Chlor-alkali plants, where corn syrup is made. Since mercury is a regulated substance, the production plants have to record how much Hg (mercury) is coming in and how much goes out- and every report, they end up "losing" lots of mercury. It ends up in your corn syrup, in your soda pop, your processed foods, etc.

My chickens are so ticked off today. I took away 1/4 of their run AND their favorite nest box (the rabbit hutch) to give it to Lucy and the chickies. They have 2 perfectly clean and brand NEW nest boxes in the coop and don't want to use them apparently. Oh well, they'll get over it.

Jess, I feel ya on the whole house work thing. I have to go pay our mortgage in Everett then come home and do the house, but decided sense I'll already be out, to take Jazz and Ratchet (puppy) to the dog park fr Ratchet's first time. Barricade can't go because I am using my brothers truck and with his bad knees poor boy can't get in it. That and he is not friendly with other dogs any more.
Then maybe I will come home and clean.... Maybe! Lol
