Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I just reheat everything in a tiny saucepan for meals or drinks, or in the oven for a little while. Rinse pan and done! And no microwave taking up space on the counter ;)

Mikey, you can achieve the same effect with corn by placing as many husks of corn as you want into a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes. All the extra stuff comes right off just like you described and no microwave contamination :)

We don't want to butcher it ourselves. Wanna sell us one all packaged up?

Well, I can't say anything for sure right now. Himself does the slaughter and cleaning - I do the butcher and wrapping; but I'm scheduled for surgery on my spine next month, so I don't have any idea how recovery will go, or for how long. I'll keep you posted though!

It's the killing that gives me issues some days. DH is awesome at those times. We don't have a place to hang meat. We have talked about building a cooler. I'll probably get a cold smoker built first because it's easier and much cheaper. We love smoked meats. We've been getting half a cow and pork from Stewart's Meats.

I hope your surgery goes good and you heal quick. Mom just had back surgery in December. They had to clean out bone spurs and fuse some vertibra this time. She's not allowed to drive for 6 months and is chomping at the bit. It helped her a ton and she says her back doesn't hurt much anymore and she's getting feeling back in her feet and legs.

I do that with corn but on the grill outside. In summer it works great. Cook everything outside on the BBQ. My neighbors think i'm crazy for it. But it doesn't heat up the house, gives me an excuse to hang out outside.

I have to keep a microwave. Without it how would my husband cook when i'm not home? He'd starve to death. Actually I haven't used the microwave in a long time looked in there today and almost puked. The man never covers anything he cooks in there.

For x-mas my mom gave me a toaster oven thingy, convection oven i think is what it's actually called. I LOVE it. Takes up same space the mircowave does. I always hate heating up a huge oven to cook for 2 people. Now I bake a lot more. My chickens better watch out if i run out of things to bake. I think Yummy will be the first chicken to bake. LOL

I would never be without my microwave if only for "corn on the cob". Take a fresh ear of corn, cut off the bottom of the husk so you can see the edges of the kernels, husk and all, put in micro for 2 min, rotate 180 degrees and micro for 2 more min. Use oven mitts, remove from micro and husk that sucker right into the compost pail. No silk, no stings left and it is perfect in texture for eating. More then one ear? Just increase the time. I do 3 min on each side for 2 ears.
No boiling, no timing, no strain and no tough corn. Mikey says, try it, you like it!

I used to do this Mikey, but then I ran across research that explains why it's not a good idea for any of us to eat microwaved food, and began reducing the microwaving in my house. We still own one, but I am working away from it. I feel guilty whenever I use the microwave. Here's a link explaining what I am talking about:
http://www.greenmedinfo.com/blog/studies-show-microwaves-drastically-reduce-nutrients-food

BTW- I watched an inspirational video on YouTube - Dr Terry Wahls, who cured herself of MS from eating nutrient-dense foods, first by taking supplements to correct deficiencies, then by using food as her healing modality. If you search on YouTube for "Minding Your Mitochondria", it comes right up. Worth the watch- it's short, but very inspirational.

This was one of the reasons I wanted to get back some acreage. I began life on a 80 acre farm, surrounded by my grandparent's 400 acres, and we always had healthy food. I learned to can and preserve, garden and pick, and care for animals. I need a refresher course on chickens, and so startting slowly has been helpful. The info on this forum is very helpful!

Depends a bit on how much one chooses to spend on electricity :)
