Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I am SO excited! I get to go see Cowgirl Grace tomorrow!!!

Hopefully I'll be coming home with an Ameraucana pullet or maybe 3 chicks!!!!

I know... I said I didn't want chicks... but you guys are killin' me with all these pictures! You are enablers!
But if I do come home with chicks.... I need a light. I need suggestions on how to do that for a low price, if that's even possible. I think I have everything else I need, and I can stop at the feed store on the way home for chick feed. Medicated, right?

I can hardly wait to see her flock and The Tunnel!!!

Newbie Question.... would it be okay to use a heating pad under the floor on one end of the brooder to provide the heat they need, instead of a red light? I'm going to use a large plastic tub for the first week or so and keep it in my laundry room.

Thanks.

Renee, here's a picture of one of the new babies meeting the older babies

ChickAudie... Thanks for posting this pic. I saw the cardboard box-bottom and a light popped on in my brain! I have a dog kennel that looks like what you have here and was trying to think of the best way to keep little ones from squeezing out between the bars. I love your solution... and the branch for a perch, too!

Also.... LOVE the coop you are building. It's gorgeous! And the material you're using is so innovative. Can't wait to see it when it's all done.

Okay BYC friends! I need help naming TurtlePowerTrav's eggs that Itsren and her son hatched!!!

The other ladies are:

Princess Buttercup
Princess Caribou (if anybody remembers that movie

)
Opal
Ophelia
Marie Antoinette
and Chocolate

They have a fancy princess coop, so they need fancy princess names

Thanks. I went out today and checked on it. I had left the lid vented and mixed it very thoroughly. It doesn't seem damp anymore, probably because for the last 2 days I've given them 5x as much (the wet stuff off the top) as usual just to try and get through the wet/damp part. I'm going to keep the lid vented and not screwed on, and keep sifting through the whole thing to mix it well so all parts get air. I think it might be ok!

I think Itsren had a brooder like that too, I got the idea from someone here on BYC. Haha, you can't resist the power of the baby chicken, nobody can resist a baby chicken!!!

Thank you for the compliments on the coop!!! I will get my dad to join BYC one of these days! He's a fantastic single carpenter!

I am curious about the heat pad too! I wonder just an old pillowcase or something over to keep it from getting too messy? I don't think they like having the light on all night? A few of them prefer the shadow area under the "inner-brooder"....

Omgosh, I hope my BA isn't a roo!! She is so funny and social!

If the seller comes through I'm picking up a half dozen Wheaten/Blue Wheaten Ameraucana eggs for my TWO Silkie broodies. I figured if the girls wanted to sit around and gossip all day together they might as well be productive. If I have a good hatch these babies will be looking for new homes though. I haven't the room to keep them all! The eggs look to be a gorgeous turquoise. The parent stock is developed from Pips & Peeps and Peachick.

Have fun KMHunter! Hope you have a good hatch from your black/black Silkie eggs! I miss my little black girl Isadora...

I HAVE TO SHARE!

If anybody is in Kent/Tukwilla, there is the BEST cafe ever!!! It's called Chestnut Cafe, and it's across the street from IKEA. The downside is they are only open Mon-Fri 7:30am-3:30pm. They are super awesome people who work there and the food is OH SO GOOD! If anybody wants to do lunch sometime, PM me! The owner LOVES to talk about chickens!!!!
