Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

There's no way I'm going to catch up on y'all, so I'll just jump in with both feet. I caught the devil's own cold, and since I wasn't able not to do chores it's dragged on and on- calving season, chickens to care for, and oh, yeah, a squirrel is eating my house, what fun. And I lost the omega cow and her calf from habitual bottom of the pecking-order disorder, which makes me sad and grouchy but also gave me another couple of hours of work every day while I was trying to prevent the inevitable. Some days I hate farming.

ANYWAY: my friend who got the extra BLRW rooster that I got from Tiff wrote me this afternoon; he has died after a brief illness, as the saying goes. She wants another BLRW; I should just give her Bjorn and get a new one to breed to the two hens I have left (Sylvia having perished from eating all sorts of non-food items) but in any case, does anyone know of a BLRW cockerel or friendly rooster available? And a blue or splash Ameraucana LF rooster; the owls got the one I was going to get from my cousin. I'm also going to need another SSH rooster this year, which may well be a trick.

Everything's laying, I've got to get a clipping table built and a sheep comb bought so I can shear Baaaachus, who is getting to big to go back to his pen, I have a dress to wear when my daughter gets married in July but am still freaking out about shoes, the dogs are still old and stinky and demanding and I mop a lot more than I want to.

Stumpfarmer, I have no idea who you are, but sounds like you have had a heck of a winter this year, and I hope it improves in multitudes for you! :)

I can't keep up on this group, and I read once a day or more! :fl

Firewife- are you going to start a separate thread for a potluck at the Monroe Poultry show next weekend, or are we scrapping the whole thing, or?:idunno

I've got a belated birthday party and fundraiser this weekend I am doign for my son, so very distracted at the moment., We've got a couple "celebrity" folks involved, so guess I gotta clean my house!

If I miss anything important, just holler at me. Probably loudly.

Good grief- I need  3 of me!:barnie

That's OK, for the past year I've been unsure as to who I might be, too, having little time for introspection, and all.

(Female, farmer, in Lacey, coming up on my second chickenversary).

Today's Egg production - see the funky one? When I saw it in the nest box, I thought it was a soft-shell, but it's not. Here is a close up. Click for larger image.
Tell your roo that being sex linked doesn't mean kinky sex. :duc That poor thing looks like it has been beaten with a anchor chain.
I thought that's just a shelless egg? I've had one from the poor departed Sylvia last summer.

I just want to throw this out there for future thought. Once we find and buy the right place, I would like to breed Ameraucanas, not EE's, but true Ameraucanas. It will be a few months for us to find, buy and settle into a place but I just want this out there so that if you breed them you can keep me in mind.
Speaking of buying a place, I found a place that I will be going to look at here really soon. There are three houses on the property, which is great because my BIL and his DW live here with us (in their own apt.) and we were hoping to find a place where they a could come with us. There is also two barns a shop for DH and many out buildings that could be coops. Also (and this is a great part) the property is 29 acres in Duval. I am trying not to get to excited like I did with the last one but I do have my

. So we will see, and I will of course let ya'll know how it goes.
Hey- with 29 acres- you got a prepper compound!

I was just sending a message to my families on my private list-serve about affordable home options.

There's a seminar in Tacoma this evening to explain home ownership programs for families with kids who have developmental disabilites/disabled kids. (also veterans, teachers, etc) The programs help families or adults with disabilities buy houses with all kinds of creative downpayment assistance, and a preferred interest rate.

One family just bought a house for their disabled, wheelchair-bound daughter for $220K, got $55K downpayment assistance, 2.5% fixed interest, and so their mortgage is $650 a month, plus taxes/insurance.

BTW- Here's info on those programs:

Chick Audie, I have been following an online women's clothing boutique called eShakti for a year now; I've been taught once already (over a dress I wanted for Easter last year) that she who hesitates looses the perfect dress, so when exactly the right print came up I ordered it immediately. My daughter's getting married outside by the water the last weekend in July, so the matter of wearing something which will cover without cooking and not be ruined by sunblock was driving me crazy.

The shoes, though, oh lord the shoes: the wedding is at the bottom of a football field sized lawn with about a 20% slope: I don't want to be dependant on a car to get me up and down, and in normal life wouldn't take that on without hiking boots. Young people never consider these things!

Hi all,

I posted in the new member forum, but thought I would also introduce myself here too as I am a Washingtonian (allbeit a fairly new Washingtonian).

Been enjoying poking around this site for some time and have loved all of the good information, awesome humor, and chicken camaraderie. Thank you!

We have six lady hen friends (Amerucana, Barred Rock, Buff Orpington, Rhode Island Red, Gold Laced Wyandotte, and a Dominique) and a surprise rooster (Cuckoo Maran), all hatched September 7th (ish) of 2012. They spent the winter in a very large cardboard box in our tiny house (never again), and are all happily outside in their awesome coop my partner designed and built. The gang spends their days 'free ranging' around our backyard, basking in the ever elusive Seattle sunshine, wading in the 'tiny stream' that runs through our yard, and 'hunting' for worms in the garden.

Just last week our Buff Orpington laid her first egg! You would have thought she won a Nobel Prize the way we celebrated that small egg. Its been about a week and she is continuing to lay an egg a day (give or take a few days). We are anxiously waiting for our other lady hen friends to catch on to how cool it is to lay eggs.

Anyways, I think that is enough for now. Excited to join you all!

Peace.

:welcome
Glad to see you stopped by HOPE you come back with us often.
